“Too many lives are being lost; too many victims injured, and too
many communities are being held hostage to this systemic
and endemic tide of violence. As a government, and
as a community, we must begin to offer proactive, rather
than reactive, alternatives.”

Anacostia Students to Host First Anniversary Edition of Spirit
in Action
Tune
in to WPFW 89.3 FM on Tuesday, January 8 from 11am until
noon for the first anniversary edition of Spirit in
Action Live. This show will be hosted by
Anacostia High School students and will be about
youth, their concerns, and from their perspective.
In January of 2006 ROOT Inc. held a mock
election for then mayoral candidates Adrian Fenty,
Michael Brown, Marie Johns, Vincent Orange, and Linda
Cropp. Over 1,000 students attended the mock
election and a large percentage in attendance was
Anacostia Senior High School Students. The
students overwhelmingly voted by 70% for Adrian Fenty in
the mock election.
In December of 2007 ROOT hosted a youth
town hall forum with Anacostia students. The
students presented the community and a panel of
dignitaries with a power point highlighting their
concerns about their issues, school, and community
violence as well as offering their solutions.
Community residents also had the opportunity to directly
address the youth about their perspective on the issue
of youth violence.
This live broadcast by
WPFW radio, 89.3 FM. will allow ROOT Inc. the
privilege to give the students of Anacostia Senior High
the ability to be able to express to the Washington, DC
metropolitan area to voice concerns about their
issues. This live broadcast of the Spirit in
Action show will be hosted by seven Anacostia senior
high school students - Alesha, Thomas, Shanae,
Philesa, Robin and Deidre. A burgeoning spoken
word artist, Patrick will recite poems related to each
topic as we transition.
Also, January is the 3rd anniversary or
GUNS ASIDE month. More information and event
announcements are forthcoming. We invite
everyone to listen in to a poignant dialogue with youth
as they candidly discuss the topics of youth public
safety, neighborhood safety, school safety, and youth
violence.
