The Last Lecture

What would you say if you only had one last chance to say it?

There is a tradition, at many universities, for professors to participate in a "last lecture series." They are challenged to speak as if they knew they were about to die. Throughout the Bible there were also leaders chosen by God who each gave their final message, filled with deep wisdom, personal reflections and even prophecies.

This fall NewSong LA has invited gifted speakers from a variety of backgrounds to give their "Last Lecture." Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate what matters most in life.

Join us each Sunday in September

He envisioned young people "building bridges of friendship to Africa," and his extraordinary vision was embodied in Operation Crossroads Africa. H. CON. RES. 24: Expressing the Sense of the Congress that the President should grant a Pardon to Marcus Mosiah...
Declares that Marcus Mosiah Garvey (founder of the National Negro Improvement Association): (1) was innocent of the charges brought against him by the U.S. government; and (2) should be recognized internationally as a leader and thinker in the struggle for human rights and dignity. Calls upon the President to endeavor to restore Garvey's honor and good name by granting him a full posthumous pardon that proclaims his conviction to have been unjust and affirms his innocence.

Groove Arts Collective and Art Whino present a special art event:

Block Party 2.0

(The BP experience definition: an art exhibition and hip social affair)

Art Whino continues to invigorate the DC art world by bringing the metro area exciting exhibitions that challenge the viewer's ideas of contemporary art. Art Whino's newest exhibition, "Block Party," is an exceptional new installation that will also serve as a reflection on art pricing and buying. Solo artist Daniel Fleres & 10 others participating in this exhibition are set to display hundreds of small paintings on wooden blocks. The exhibition will be a large installation of these little wood pieces varying in depth that are designed to be displayed singly, in groupings and even as collaboration pieces. They directly address his dedicated following of young, new collectors with this installation, challenging the idea that good art has to be unattainable to be valuable. The exhibition was designed around the idea that art should be accessible to people of all ages and income levels, & therefore all works in the show will be priced at the same affordable price. As an installation, the exhibition is designed to let you, the buyer, participate in the artistic process as a composer of the forms. Join us at Art Whino on the National Harbor- Thur., Sept. 25th 7pm.

For more information about Art Whino and Block Party 2.0 visit www.artwhino.com.

We all understand that gun and youth violence are issues that plague many of our communities across the country. The CAN DO bill attempts to change attitudes and behaviors towards gun violence by bringing together the entire community to address this issue. The CAN DO bill will allow communities to combat the issue of gun violence by attacking the ROOT of the problem with a community-based, comprehensive, cohesive, strategic approach. The bill calls for a four-pronged attack on gun violence in our worst crime-infested neighborhoods though (1.) enhanced law enforcement (2.) mental health and psychological counseling (3.) employment training and opportunity (4.) educational and recreational services for at-risk youth.
Please RSVP by Wednesday September 24, 2008 at: www.rootinc.org or by contacting me at (202) 332-ROOT. If you are unable to join us for this historic event, please show your support with a simple response or by requesting to join our National Congressional Blue Ribbon Task Force.

Thank you for taking the time to consider the important task we have before us in addressing gun and youth violence.  The sooner we all take a stand against this devastating epidemic, the sooner we can start to heal our communities and prevent the unnecessary violence and loss of life that dominates so many of our communities. I look forward to hearing from you and to the significant impact your support will bring during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's (CBC) 38th Annual Legislative Conference.

Sincerely,
  Kenneth E. Barnes Sr. MS.
