Trinidad and Tobago 44th Independence celebration in Washington DC

September 2nd, 2006

Benefit concert at the Embassy of France featuring tenor soloist of the Lydiaan Singers, Eddie Cumberbatch.  See details below.

Washington DC - The steering committee consisting of Dr. Acklyn Lynch, Mr. Stephen Matthews, Dr. Melodie Toby and Mr. Michael Matthews appointed by Her Excellency, the Honorable Marina A. Valère, Trinidad & Tobago’s Ambassador to the United States, is seeking cash or in-kind support for a benefit concert to be held on Saturday, September 2, 2006 in celebration of the 44th Anniversary of Trinidad and Tobago’s Independence. All proceeds will go to Love in Action and the Torres Foundation for the Blind, two non-profit organizations dedicated to raising funds to meet the needs of school children and the visually impaired in Trinidad and Tobago. The event which will be held at La Maison Française at the French Embassy in Washington, DC, will showcase three renowned nationals of Trinidad and Tobago, and will be held under the patronage of the Ambassador.

Our aim is to generate funds for the selected non-profit organizations. Your assistance and the support of others will help to defray the many expenses incurred in staging the event. These include the cost of venue, a pre-concert reception for patrons of the event; travel, hotel and meals for the artistes, printing of programs, tickets and promotional material. In addition, contributions of $ 300 or more in cash or in kind will receive an invitation to attend the reception hosted by the Ambassador. The auditorium can accommodate three hundred guests and the minimum donation requested is $ 50 per person for each event.

Patrons will be entitled to attend the pre-concert reception, receive special seating at the concert, and will be listed prominently in the Program credits, the souvenir journal, and a DVD of the event. This second annual Concert Series will be the culmination of a week long celebration of Trinidad and Tobago’s independence to be officially celebrated on August 31. It will be yet another aspect of the range and excellence of talent that is the hallmark of all that Trinidad and Tobago offers.

We look forward to your support.  The Steering Committee (301)576-0683

Cynthia McKinney Presents Hip-Hop Forum at Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference
By Chris Richburg
Date: 8/29/2006

xml

Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) will host a Hip-Hop forum at this year's Congressional Black Caucus Legislative Conference.

The Hip-Hop Powershop, scheduled for Sept. 7, will feature a panel that will discuss gang summits and industry manipulation of the true message and meaning of Hip-Hop artists.

Panelists include DC Hip-Hop artists Asheru and Head-Roc as well as Rev. Yearwood (Hip-Hop Caucus), Jared Ball (University of Maryland, Hip-Hop historian, Blackademics on WPFW), Lisa Frager (Industry Ears, Hip-Hop media expert) and former Crips and Gangster Disciple gangmembers.

The event is one of a series "braintrust forums" McKinney will host that will examine critical current issues facing African-Americans and the entire country.

Other forums will address past victims of COINTELPRO abuses, and their renewal in many forms since 9/11 as well as discuss the award-winning films American Blackout and Sir! No Sir!

American Blackout documents Black voter disenfranchisement and voter fraud in national and local elections, while Sir! No Sir! Looks at the hidden history of GI and veteran resistance that ended the war in Vietnam.

An outspoken critic of the Bush Administration, McKinney spearheaded a national investigation into the 2000 election voting irregularities.

Last year, she introduced House Resolution 4210, a new bill that calls for the United States government to release all documents it has collected on slain rapper Tupac Shakur.

HR 4210 calls for "the creation of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Records Collection at the National Archives; and a second repository at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia."

Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York.

The Miss Trinidad and Tobago New York takes place at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Haft Auditorium, West 27th Street at Seventh Avenue, in Manhattan, set to begin at 7:00 pm.  A dozen young women will be competing for the title.

This year - the 10th year, founder Renee Cummings will pay special tribute to the work of T&T born master hair weaver Clem Lue Yat who will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award along with legendary T&T queen maker Jacqui Koon of the famed House of Jacqui Modeling Agency.

Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York, says Cummings, is celebrated not as a beauty pageant but as a developmental program for young women of Trinidad & Tobago heritage living in New York. The T&T-born Cummings has spent the last decade branding the pageant, adding, "There is nothing more beautiful than an educated woman."  And she has strived to redefine the word beauty. "There is this big myth that beauty comes in a particular, shape, size, and hue but not at Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York," said Cummings. "We embrace diversity and encourage difference. We do not look for generic or archaic cookie-cutter images of beauty. We look for real women with a real contribution to make," Cummings added.

For a preview of this year's line up log on to http://www.missttny.com. Tickets for the show are $40 in advance..
