Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago is the place to be, said Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Tourism Howard Chin Lee while enjoying calypso rhythms during the festival. "Our Carnival is like fine wine, it gets better every year," he said, adding that while Trinidad and Tobago offers beaches and eco-tourism attractions, its industrial base has helped position the nation as an important meetings destination.

With great enthusiasm, we the students of Howard University in partnership with ROOT, Inc. (Reaching Out to Others Together) wish to announce the Howard University and ROOT Community in Action/Shaw Logan Circle Project Youth Summit. The Summit will be held on November 16, 2007 in the Ballroom of Blackburn Center at Howard University from 8:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
We are currently experiencing an epidemic of Violence in our community including gun violence, drive-bys, school shootings, domestic violence, drug violence, and gang violence that affects us all. This epidemic needs to be stopped before we lose our peer groups and seriously cripple future generations.
Community in Action/The Shaw Logan Circle Project. is a coalition of private citizens, community agencies, corporate businesses, faith-based organizations, non-profits, local, state and federal government agencies being formed under the auspices of ROOT, Inc with funding from the office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and with the direct support of Mayor Adrian Fenty, Councilmembers Jim Graham, Jack Evans, and Kwame Brown to reduce violence and increase public safety in those communities. The goals of the Youth Summit are to (1) To establish a preliminary template of perceived causes and solutions to factors contributing to gun violence and the increase in youth violence; (2) To appoint a Youth/Adult Advocacy Council to be composed of students, adults, and representatives for schools, local government officials and ROOT affiliates; and (3) To work with ROOT to develop the Awareness Campaign to reach our youth.

The Summit will feature youth from participating schools within the Shaw/Logan Circle Community in Action Project demographic area, i.e., Shaw, Garnett/Patterson, Cardozo, Dunbar, et al,  and key community members and government officials dedicated to eliminating this epidemic of violence.

Those of us who have tasted the bitterness of violence at all levels would truly value your support as we attempt to bring healing to our communities and to prevent others from feeling the same anguish that accompanies the loss of a loved one.

Please contact Ms. Ava Harrison at 202-332-7886 to RSVP, for details and to arrange for parking if needed. We look forward to your response and participation.
