Eduardo Peralta is a Chilean guitarist, singer, composer, and arranger.  He began his international career with a 1979 European tour of special events for Chilean exiles. Since that time, as a leading interpreter of Chilean canto nuevo, Peralta has toured 25 countries, and has six solo recordings. In 1989 Peralta took an active role in the Chilean democratization movement, and has served for the past decade as Secretary General of the Consejo de la Sociedad Chilena del Derecho de Autor. He has recorded and appeared with Silvio Rodríguez, Mercedes Sosa, and León Gieco.  A noted interpreter of French chansonnier Georges Brassens (1921-1981), Peralta has translated and recorded dozens of Brassens compositions. The French government named Peralta Chevalier des Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2004.

 

Cecilia Echenique has recorded 13 albums, and performed with Mario Rojas, Diapasión Porteño, Joan Baez, Roberto Bravo, Eduardo Gatti, Joan Manuel Serrat, Mercedes Sosa, Eva Ayllon, and Patricio Manns, among many others.  She studied Baroque music at Princeton University, but has been devoted to popular Chilean music since the early 1980s when she was a featured performer on the children´s television show Mazapán in Chile.  She has been performing with Eduardo Peralta since 1982 and in 2005 they launched their duo album Hoy como Ayer, songs from the Canto Nuevo movement.  She has received the Premio Sociedad Chilena del Derecho de Autor,1996; Premio Altazor 2002 and 2004; and was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2002.

Aging Baby Boomers Health Fair Series Highlights Women’s Health Month

Jamaii Africa, a non-profit, community organization,  to develop a 3-part health fair series to address the health care needs and aging strategies for this fast growing population and to also address the needs of the caretakers of the  aging.   In recognition of Women’s Health Month, an “Aging Baby Boomers Health Fair” is scheduled  for three Saturdays (May 17, May 31 & June 28)

May 31, tentatively planned at the  4th District Police Station, Georgia Avenue, N.W. (Ward 4)

June 28 tentatively planned at Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, 10th and Michigan Avenue, N.E. 

Admission is free and open to the public

With each fair offering a variety of free health screenings featuring the opportunity for mature, low income women to register for free cervical and breast cancer screening; lite refreshments; and information, presentations,  and  demonstrations to  address some of the health needs for successful aging, caretaking and women’s concerns.  

With the many health technology advances available today, people are living longer and enjoying more quality health into old age.  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services made the headlines recently, with the statistical data that every day, almost 11,000 baby boomers are turning age 50.  This alarming statistic prompted , 

The health fair series is co-sponsored by the D.C. Department of Health,  (Project Wish ),  and Jamii Africa along with the following community partners, IONA Senior Center, Positive EnergyWorks, George Washington Cancer Institute, Health Right Insurance Group, African Women Cancer Awareness, Metropolitan Podiatry Association, Howard Dental Clinic and Unity Health Care.
