for NEA's Read Across America Day
Students
in Lanham & Hyattsville, MD will join millions of their peers
across the country to celebrate the ninth annual National Education
Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day on March 1, 2007.
NEA's Read Across America Day, which falls on Dr. Seuss's 103rd
birthday (March 2), expects more than 45 million readers, both young
and old, to pick up a book and read.
To
honor the good doctor and celebrate the fun and value of reading, Read
Across Jamaica Foundation is asking you to join NEA and many of
America's leading literacy, youth, and civic groups in bringing a
nation of readers together under one hat-the red and white stovepipe
made famous by the Cat in the Hat-for a flurry (or furry) of reading
excitement!

Minou
Tavarez Mirabal will speak at the Latin American Community Center on
Thursday, March 27, at 8:00 p.m. on the “Role
of Women in the Political Process”, especially in the current
presidential campaign. Tavarez is a sought after speaker whose history
on advocacy for women’s personal and political rights descend directly
from her family. She is the daughter of two Dominican national heroes
and martyrs, Manuel Aurelio Tavárez Justo and Minerva Mirabal, both
founders of the anti-dictatorship movement of the 1960’s. Her family
history is most popularly known as the story of the Mirabal Sisters, a
true to life drama that has been depicted in Julia Alvarez's 1994 novel
''In the Time of the Butterflies, and the movie in 2001. Minou Tavarez
Mirabal was 4 when her mother and two aunts were assassinated by
Dictator Rafael Trujillo.
Minou Mirabal is a second
term Deputy Foreign Minister and holds a B.A. in Hispanic Philology, as
well as a master’s degree in Hispanic Linguistics and Upper
Management. Tavárez Mirabal previously headed the Spanish Department at
APEC University in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She also is a
member of the Central Committee of the ruling Dominican Liberation Party
headed by President Leonel
Fernándezz,
who is running for a second consecutive term on May 16, 2008, DR
presidential election.
The Dominican Liberation
Party Council of DE works towards promoting awareness to the mainland
Dominican citizens of DE on the current and future state of the
Dominican Republic. The councils are formed nationwide to maintain
communication with the Dominican community in the U.S., in addition to
creating and fostering relationship building with officials and leaders
of the U.S. and the D.R. These events cultivate alliances, and create
opportunities for dialog on economic development, education, arts and
cultural interactions. Previous visits from delegates of the D.R.
include the Secretary of State of Education. Alejandrina German in 2005,
who met with officials from
the Delaware Department of
Education, University of DE, the Mayor of Wilmington and other key
community leaders; also Deputy Foreign Minister of Art and Culture
Manuel Jimenez, in 2007, to mention a few.
The Hispanic Business Association of DE has extended an
invitation to President Leonel Fernandez to speak at their first
business recognition event taking place later on this year.

recognizing our 2008 Honorees in
special events in New York City on March
28 and 29, 2008.
On Friday, March 28,
the 2008 Honorees will be recognized at a High Tea held from 2:00
to 5:00 at the Puck Building, 295 Lafayette Street in New York City.
Doors open at 1:30.
A Gala exhibition and art sale will be on view from 5PM until
9PM, featuring a special preview from 5PM to 6PM for collectors,
curators, critics and the general public.
A.I.R.'s first Gala is the highlight of a series of events
celebrating women in the arts during National Women's History Month. The
centerpiece of the Gala is a retrospective of artists who have exhibited
work at A.I.R. Gallery over the past 36 years. Works by the artists who
have not shown at A.I.R. but have actively supported our mission
over the years will also be on view.
On Saturday, March 29, 2008, the
National Women’s History Project is sponsoring a special Women's Art
Brunch and Bus Tour. From noon until 2:30, we will host a
brunch at the Pen and Brush Club, 16 E 10th Street , NYC, which was
established in 1894 and is the oldest women’s art club in New York
City.
The Brunch program will include a presentation by Molly Murphy
MacGregor, executive director and co-founder of the National Women’s
History Project discussing the founding of National Women’s History
Month.
Robert P.J. Cooney, Jr., author of Winning the Vote: The
Triumph of the American Suffrage Movement, will give a
brief multi-media presentation on Women’s Art and the Woman
Suffrage Movement. A booksigning will follow.
At 2:30 a bus will leave from the Pen and Brush Club for the Brooklyn
Museum to see The Dinner Party.
The bus will return to the Pen and Brush Club at 5:00. |
