St. Augustine’s 1st Annual Africa & Diaspora Day 2008 marks the 150th Anniversary of one of the oldest Black Catholic churches in the nation and the oldest in Washington, DC. Founded in 1858 by emancipated slaves, St. Augustine Catholic Church and School have a rich history and cultural legacy that are an integral part of a vibrant Washington, DC community—an area that has more than 100,000 Black Catholics including burgeoning populations from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.

From that glorious day on July 4, 1864 at the White House, which hosted the first fundraiser for St. Augustine’s Catholic School and at which President Abraham Lincoln made an appearance; to the historic March on Washington in August 1963 for which St. Augustine’s provided lodging and logistics support for demonstrators; and up to the early 1980’s when the church was active in the Free South Africa movement, playing a key role in securing the freedom of a South African priest—St. Augustine’s has always been a beacon of hope and progress in the community
