On-Line Family and Friends: Greetings To All Of
You!!!
Democracy
was certainly exercised this week in Washington DC!
Positively,
the people exercised their right to vote and was heard
loud and clear that “Enough-is-Enough” with
their Incumbent Mayor – Mr. Adrian Fenty [Outgoing
Mayor since Mr. Fenty lost his reelection bid in the
Primary Elections some days ago to Vincent Gray.
Mr. Gray will be the Mayor due to there being NO
Republican challenger in the November General election.]
Truly
this week’s primary mayoral election result did not
come as a surprise to me, because I have heard the cries
of the citizens of Washington DC.
Their youngest Mayor – Mr. Fenty was unwilling
to work with, or hear the people; nor did he focus on
their virtue, energy or even their intelligence.
He merely refused to be in touch with their
feelings, among other things; which resulted in him
governing ineffectively.
Indeed it was quite apparent by the results that
the citizens were adamant about not reelecting him for a
2nd term!
I
have always admired the young mayor throughout his years
of service to the city, and having the opportunity to
deal with him on a professional level was outstanding. He became more of an inspiration to me as he served on a
board I was a part of, [he was one of the Advisory
Council member.]
As
he grew, so did his successes; all beginning back in
2000 when he won the seat for Ward 4 Council member
(defeating Charlene Drew Jarvis;) and I watched
his progress through a couple of terms in this position.
What an aggressive, motivated and committed
council member he was!!!
During this time I was tremendously pleased to
have been afforded the special opportunity to really hear him,
and fully understand his goals.
Mr.
Fenty’s advancement towards his goals was remarkable,
and he aggressively worked hard on obtaining them.
Needless to say, due to his tireless efforts it
was easy visualizing his plans and dreams for Washington
DC, and a majority of Washington DC's citizens saw it as
well. Therefore,
he unanimously won the Mayoral race in 2006 with 89% of
the general election vote.
I personally was thrilled about his great
accomplishments, especially the fact that he was the
youngest Mayor of this great city.
I strongly believed THEN he truly cared about
Washington DC and its citizens, as I STILL do now!
However,
something went dreadfully wrong during his term.
The observations and silent whispers about
something as minute as his attitude (in my opinion)
became louder, and the negative talk and rumors about
him being arrogant and even ignorant began truly
surfacing. It
was further said he would not take the time to listen to
anyone. Indeed
the attitude change was visible via his press
conferences and interviews; but to be quite honest, I
was sure all the good he had been doing would supersede
these negatives. However,
I was wrong, because the people who had unanimously
elected this young man to govern their city felt he was
not inclusive; that he was utterly oblivious to them and
their concerns; totally shutting them out; and just
being completed disconnected with the people and their
needs. Moreover,
it is well known that a huge percentage of DC citizens
and beyond was sickened by his consent and execution of
the firing of hundreds of DC teachers (as he tried to
reform the school system).
I
spent some time reflecting on all the good Mr. Fenty had
done and was absolutely convinced it would override the
negativity that was surfacing.
After all he accomplished so many things; such as
the many re-development projects across the city of
schools, libraries, parks and recreation centers;
appointing a great Chief of Police - Ms. Cathy
Lanier, which resulted in achieving success with public
safety and the incredible decline in the crime rate
(specifically homicides); as well as his tireless
efforts to restructure the entire school system; reform
of education (by appointing a new chancellor of the
District of Columbia Public Schools system - Ms.
Michelle Rhee to do the job); and so much more.
It truly is saddening to see the majority of a
city who I knew [for a fact] was very excited to have
such a young Mayor run their city, and then to see them
lose hope and even love for this man.
Gee,
I wondered what was going on with Mr. Fenty…truly
taking place in his life to reveal such a different
person. I
even speculated and discussed this issue on so many
occasions with Associates, and we never really came to
one specific conclusion regarding the change.
We all did take into account and discussed in
detail that it was a great possibility his position and
successes (at such a young age) may have crept
into his head; making him believe he was superior or
“hot”, and further making him feel he NO longer
needed and respected the folks who supported him,
believed in him and put him in the position he was in.
On
the real though,
oftentimes we find in our society when we reach a
certain level we tend to get “big headed”,
and begin to look down on the people who was walking
beside us and did everything in their power to help us
along the treacherous and difficult pathway to success.
We absolutely forget how we got there and who
helped us to get to that certain level.
Generally, the arrogance and the “it’s all
about me” creeps in and disrespectfulness towards
our supporters and friends become prominent.
I suppose our arrogant friends should practice
the following statement “Don’t believe the hype”!
As
I further analyze this situation, I realized we had
experienced the same type of behavior as Mr. Fenty
exhibited from someone we considered a dear friend.
Of course like Mr. Fenty, our friend was
ambitious, hard working, young and pretty successful.
However, it seemed success began “blowing
our friend’s mind,” because little things we did
especially our conversations [that was never out of
the ordinary] were interpreted differently by our
friend. On
many occasions we were told we were confrontational.
[Weird, the same interesting discussions and
conversations we would have for years suddenly became
unintelligent to our friend and we were
confrontational…Wow!!!]
It was clear success was the culprit.
NO longer would our friend take the time to
listen, acknowledge, or thank.
Ignorance and the “it’s all about me”
syndrome took over our friend’s life. [Even though you are proud and is truly happy for you
friend/s, it is awfully clear that along with success
the belief that what they say is always right; and what
they do is always right; and therefore you NO longer
have a voice in their life.]
You and your conversations simply become
futile, because they cannot hear you anymore.
Which is the saddest thing to experience!]
I
do hope Adrian Fenty sees where he went wrong and try to
NEVER make those mistakes again.
He is a brilliant and fascinating young man, full
of energy, motivated and has so much potential.
I do wish him and his family all the best as he
continue making strides in his life.

We
lost a world famous Soca Legend this week and many
around the world are mourning this great lost.
Mr. Alponsus Celestine Edmund Cassell,
better know as “The Mighty Arrow” passed away
this week specifically on September 15th to
the long dreaded illness - “brain Cancer”.
This 55 year old platinum hit Soca legend had
been battling this disease for approximately a year, and
finally succumbed at his home in Lime Kiln, Montserrat.
"The Might Arrow" did a lot for Soca
music and the Calypso industry as a whole, due to his
hit song "Hot...Hot...Hot" crossing
over to the MAINSTREAM market.
We
at Arious have been a long time fan of "Arrow"
and will not forget the many parties we attended ("back
in the days") dancing
to his hits: “Hot…Hot…Hot,” “Groove
Masters,” and our all time favorite “Long
Time.” You can just imagine how thrilled we were to
officially meet "The Mighty Arrow" some
years ago as he performed for one of DC’s most
successful Caribbean Carnival (the Carnival that was
held on Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest Washington DC
in 2003); and this legend was truly a lovely man and
an absolute genuine person. Todd fondly remembers
"Arrow" taking the time to talk with
him. Telling
him that he was an avid reader of our E-Newsletter and
expressed how much he truly liked what we were/are doing
with the Newsletter.
He
further advised Todd to continue with reaching out to
the people of our community, and to never stop reaching
for our goals, nor ever stop with all that we are doing.
Gosh, this advice Todd and I truly appreciated!
Our
sincerest condolences goes out to the family, friends,
and fans of this brilliant legend and fantastic person,
who was phenomenal as an entertainer. Our heart,
thoughts and prayers are with you all. May "The
Mighty Arrow" rest in peace.

It is a sad and somber day in Montserrat
today. The nation and fans around the world are
mourning the death of soca super star Arrow.
The acclaimed international performer passed
away quietly at his home in Lime Kiln this morning
after a long illness.
Arrow, who was diagnosed with brain cancer
in 2009, returned from Antigua on Monday after
being hospitalized in Antigua.
His brother Justin Hero Cassell said he
finally succumbed to his illness.
Hero also says the family will be making
announcements in the future on funeral
arrangements.
In a statement issued a short while ago the family
expressed thanks to the medical teams, friends and
family who gave their support during the period of
his illness.
The statement said that Arrow is responsible
for taking to soca genre to the international
music scene with his 1982 smash hit Hot, Hot, Hot.
Having won the local calypso competition on
four occasions, the talents of the proud son of
Montserrat were spotted by former Beatles manager,
Sir George Martin, who worked with Arrow to
turn his focus to his recording and touring
career.
The family said his death is a great loss to
the family, his native land of Montserrat and the
music world.
...
...
The family also said that funeral
announcements will be made in due course.
Cassell first performed aged 10 in a concert
at the Montserrat Secondary School.
He began singing calypso in 1967 and took
the Junior Monarch title that year.
He took up singing professionally in 1969,
and released his first single, “Dance with Me,
Woman” in 1972.
Arrow set up his own Arrow label in 1973 and
began to fuse calypso with other genres such as
R&B, Zouk and salsa, which brought soca music
to a new audience.
He recorded Hot Hot Hot in 1982, which
became the biggest selling soca hit of all time.
It was adopted as the theme song of the 1986
FIFA World Cup in Mexico, and was later covered by
Buster Poindexter, Menudo, and Babla & Kanchan.
He capitalized on this success with
1983′s Heat album, and the “Rub Up”
single, and 1984′s Soca Savage album, from
which the international hit “Long Time” was
taken, a top 30 hit in the United Kingdom.
He enjoyed further chart success in the UK
with a remixed version of “Hot Hot Hot”, which
reached number 38.
Arrow also established himself as a
businessman in Montserrat, owning the Arrow’s
Manshop store.
He was in heavy demand until his illness, and
performed for President Barrack Obama in 2009
and before that the Cricket World Cup 2007
opening ceremonies with Shaggy, Byron Lee and
Kevin Lyttle.
Current calypso monarch of Antigua and
former Calypso King in Montserrat Bear said news
of Arrow’s death spolit his 49th birthday today.
