Greetings On
Line Family:
I was so
looking forward to attending the New York Carnival this past weekend, but we didn't make
it to any of the festivities. Even though we had lots of
plans, we just couldn't get out of town at a reasonable
time. Once we got to New York, we were unable to get to the
Carnival due to all the police barricades around the vicinity of
the event. Anyway, after circling the vicinity and just
hitting dead ends for a number of hours, we gave up and headed
back to Maryland. I guess it wasn't meant for us to get
there this year.
I got some
feedback from friends and they indicated it was not a good
experience for them. One stated there were far too many
people in attendance, and a few other expressed their
frustrations about the police barricades deterring them from
entering the vicinity, some even had to break the police
lines. Another indicated that she was completely bored,
and didn't like the 'J'ouvert' at all, she felt none of the Pan
Bands played good, and there were no vibes. So as you can see there were many
different comments about this years' festivities. I wonder
if we all are just getting old and grumpy?
Well, to those who attended let me know how
your experience was. How were the costumes? How was
panorama, the dimanche gras, the kiddies carnival,
and how was 'J'ouvert'? I understand Buju Banton and Shawn Paul
was on the VP truck (which had a huge crowd)...is this correct?
Todd will
be back next week, he got a little busy working and on
completing his "My Caribbean Story".
"Da Souls of Black Folks" continues for the next few
days - today, September 8 and September 9, 2006.
You will find the details for
the today and tomorrow's event listed under "This Weekend Events". |

Miss
Trinidad & Tobago New York.
The Miss Trinidad and Tobago New York takes place at
the Fashion Institute of Technology, Haft Auditorium,
West 27th Street at Seventh Avenue, in Manhattan, set to
begin at 7:00 pm. A dozen young women will be
competing for the title.
This year - the 10th year, founder Renee Cummings
will pay special tribute to the work of T&T born
master hair weaver Clem Lue Yat who will receive a
Lifetime Achievement Award along with legendary T&T
queen maker Jacqui Koon of the famed House of Jacqui
Modeling Agency.
Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York, says Cummings, is
celebrated not as a beauty pageant but as a
developmental program for young women of Trinidad &
Tobago heritage living in New York. The T&T-born
Cummings has spent the last decade branding the pageant,
adding, "There is nothing more beautiful than an
educated woman." And she has strived to
redefine the word beauty. "There is this big myth
that beauty comes in a particular, shape, size, and hue
but not at Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York,"
said Cummings. "We embrace diversity and encourage
difference. We do not look for generic or archaic
cookie-cutter images of beauty. We look for real women
with a real contribution to make," Cummings added.
For a preview of this year's line up log on to
http://www.missttny.com.Tickets for the show are $40 in
advance.
Or you can catch a live preview on Saturday, September
9th aboard the Sheryll Princess cruise from Emmons
Avenue in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn from 7 P.M. Tickets
for the ride is $45 with a free buffet but cash bar.
Music will be by DJ Spice and Third Base. Tickets for
the boat ride and the show can be purchased either by

Brooklyn, New York
To our New York Family -
please support!!!

Support New York Council Woman Yvette Clarke as she runs for
Congress - the 11th Congressional District Seat. Victory
to Ms. Clarke's on September 12th.
Dear Friend,
I am New York City Councilmember Yvette Clarke
and I am running for Congress because the communities I
represent are being harmed by the mean-spirited leadership in
power in Washington. An independent voice from Brooklyn is long
overdue. I will not stand by while the vast majority of central
Brooklyn residents remain marginalized by the policymakers who
impact on our lives.
Let's Work Together
. . .
We must expand access to healthcare, not reduce
it. We must stand up for new Americans, not criminalize them or
criminalize those who help them. We should put our money where
our mouth is on education, and make sure our children have top-
notch schools. We must protect a woman’s fundamental right to
make decisions about her own body, and expand her opportunities
to care for herself and her family. We must assure that economic
opportunities are inclusive, because our diverse communities
must grow together, or our vast potential will not be realized.
We
are on the verge of making history. On September 12th, Primary Day, we will come
together to make a statement about the kind of representation
our neighborhoods need in the U.S. Congress and I
really need your help. Our opponents are spending huge
amounts of money to take control of this district, but the
people are with us. Your participation has given me an advantage
in this race and so I am asking you to come out and help us with
the final push. The campaign needs help with the following:
- Leafleting at Subway Stations
- Phone banking at the campaign office
- Letter stuffing at the campaign office
- Placing posters in your neighborhood business
- Helping out on election day
Let's
uplift Brooklyn with an outpouring of people power never seen
before! It's
because of people like you that our campaign has come this far
and it will only be with your
help that we will win on September 12th.
Please
Sign up by clicking
here or calling our campaign office at 718-904-6640.
Gratefully,
Yvette
D. Clarke
PS:
Honorable H. Carl McCall has just endorsed me for Congress, a
truly great honor, and a confirmation that our message of unity
and independence in Brooklyn is right for our communities. See
our press release below.
