Hello
to all among our
On Line Family:
Since
June of this year I have been stressed about a big
problem that is plaguing our communities, our
families, our friends, and it is even creeping into the
corporate world as well. A problem that most of
us keep hidden and a problem that results in death in
many cases. I am referring to Domestic
Abuse/Violence. I have never personally experienced this in
my home and in my marriage, but I have seen several of my
female family members endure this violence during my
childhood years growing up in Trinidad. So much so
that I found myself vowing that I will not be subjected
to such ill treatment, and even found myself hating
those who inflicted physical and mental pain to the
women in my family.
You
know as a child, I thought this was the way life was for
women, and that they had to accept the abuse and
violence. So of course this affected me terribly,
but thank God I did not grow up accepting this,
and I was able to find a kind and understanding partner
to share my life with. One who is happy to see my
strengths and enjoys watching me go after what I want
and helps me with achieving them/my goals.
Now,
this problem has been plaguing our communities for years
upon years, and instead of it getting better, it seems
to be getting worst.
I remember while dating my
husband (a number of years ago) an incident took place
with his mother's best friend (who had been friends from
childhood) and it
took a toll on my Mother-in-law, and the entire family
as a whole.

We have asked Jan to share with you her loss of Dorothy,
so please read
Jan's account of what took
place regarding the unfortunate death of her best
friend.

The
loss of my best friend through Domestic Violence

Susan
and Todd asked me to share a Domestic Violence incident
with you, their online family.
However,
out of respect for the remaining members of Dorothy’s
family, I will not elaborate on everything that happened
to bring this about.
Dorothy
and I had been best friends since high school. She and
her husband were high school “sweethearts”.
They were married a year or so after graduation.
She loved him very
much. I suppose he loved her too, in his own way.
There
were many “red flags” before and throughout the
marriage. But, as they say “love is blind.”
One
morning my mother called me. She and Dorothy worked
together. She said that Dorothy was dead. Her husband
killed her and calmly walked away.
Her
daughter dropped her off early that morning; as she was
going in to the building where she worked, her husband
came out from where he was hiding and beat her with a
hammer until she was dead.
This
incident occurred in Prince George’s County, Maryland
nearly 25 years ago. Dorothy was 38 years old. She had
been married for 20 years and was the mother of 4
children. She
was a wonderful person. I am not saying this because she
was my best friend. Dorothy was a good person, a good
mother and a good wife.
She
endured so much for years. I encouraged her to get a job
so that she could gain some independence.
She did this, and finally separated from her
husband. But he knew where she lived, and constantly
tormented her.
I
warned her only a week before her death. I advised her
to leave the area. However, she said that she was not
afraid of him. He was stalking her. He broke the
windshield out of her car with a hammer (most likely,
the same hammer he used to kill her.). He came to her
job and threatened her in front of several of her
co-workers, a few weeks before he killed her.
He always said if he couldn't have her nobody
else would.
There
was a Restraining Order against him; but he totally
ignored this and continued harassing her.
She called the police on several occasions, but he would
leave before they arrived.
This
is only a brief overview of the life of my friend. This
type of thing seems to be so common now.
Maybe
it’s because of the society we are living in today.
There is so much stress and anger, due to everything
that’s happening around us. Sometimes we release that
anger on our spouse. Sometimes it goes back to
childhood. Traumatic events in childhood can leave
mental scars that last a lifetime.
Whatever
the reason, it is senseless to physically or verbally
abuse or kill another human being. Regardless of how
important a problem may seem, it is not worth abusing or
taking the life of another person.
It
is so much better to walk away from the situation or
seek professional guidance. |
As
you see this took place approximately 25 years ago, but
it still continues. Some women today are still
afraid to acknowledge the problems and seek help, and
those who do seek help in many cases are ignored; which
in a high percentage of cases ends up tragically. As with the
very publicized local case of Yvette Cade, who was set on fire
by her husband and thank god has survived miraculously.
Ms. Cade suffered severe (3rd degree) burns to 60% of her body
and lives on today being committed to encouraging others to
leave abusive relationships.
Actually,
Ms. Cade as with Jan's friend had been separated from her
husband and had the restraining orders, but her husband
proceeded with harassing her and had become more and more angry
when she refused to reconcile. Since the restraining order
had expired she went before a PG County District Judge (Judge
Palumbo) who callously dismissed her plea to extend it.
Only 3 week later her husband went to her place of work, doused
her with gasoline and set her on fire. She could have been
dead like Jan's best friend.
Ladies
and gentlemen among our on-line family it seems this is a major
problem here locally, especially here in Prince Georges County,
Maryland. Actually, Essence Magazine has published a piece
written by Renee Graham that discussed this major problem taking
place in PG County. Even though PG county is the nation's
most prosperous Black community, the rate of domestic violence
reports are high, and it seems our sisters are hiding it and
suffering in silence, and some are even dying. Pick up the
magazine and check this story out, it's entitled "The
Secret Same of Prince George's County."
Now,
I do know of some Sisters who has endured this abuse and still
is enduring it as I write. I pray that they obtain the
strength to take some major steps to solving their problems and
stopping the constant physical and mental abuse. It is
clear our sisters just don't want to admit they are having these
problems in their homes.
I
actually know of a few who has done something about it and who
really needed the support from family and friends to put the
abuser away, but they never got that support. I know of
many who have lied in court just to save the abuser (they didn't
want to see them go to jail). How absurd!!!!
Those
who have lied to save the abuser are just as bad as the abuser,
because they are encouraging the abuse to take place!!!
They
have the means to stop it, but don't seem to want to do so, or
even want to get involved simply because as I stated above
- they didn't want the individual to go to jail!!!
To these folks, I beg you to get involved, you can save lives,
so stop hiding from the truth and lying for those who abuse our
Sisters, our Mothers our Daughters and even our Brothers!!!!
For
those of you who don't know, I have listed a few facts on
Domestic Violence below.

Did
you know?
•
Estimates range from 960,000 incidents of violence
against a current or former spouse boyfriend,
or girlfriend per year
to
three million women who are physically abused by their
husband or boyfriend per year.
•
Around the world, at least one in every three women
has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise
abused during her lifetime.
•
Nearly one-third of American women (31 percent)
report being physically or sexually abused
by
a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.
•
Nearly 25 percent of American women report being
physically assaulted and/or raped by a
current
or former spouse, cohabiting partner, or date at some
time in their lifetime, according to
the
National Violence Against Women Survey
•
Thirty percent of Americans say they know a woman who
has been physically abused by her
husband
or boyfriend in the past year.
•
In the year 2001, more than half a million American
women (588,490 women) were victims of
nonfatal
violence committed by an intimate partner.
•
Intimate partner violence is primarily a crime
against women. In 2001, women accounted for
85
percent of the victims of intimate partner violence
(588,490 total) and men accounted for
approximately
15 percent of the victims (103,220 total).
•
While women are less likely than men to be victims of
violent crimes overall, women are five
to
eight times more likely than men to be victimized by an
intimate partner.
•
Intimate partner violence made up 20 percent of
violent crime against women.
•
Women of all races are about equally vulnerable to
violence by an intimate.
•
Male violence against women does much more damage
than female violence against men;
women
are much more likely to be injured than men.
•
The most rapid growth in domestic relations caseloads
is occurring in domestic violence filings.
•
Women are seven to 14 times more likely than men to
report suffering severe physical assaults
from
an intimate partner
Domestic
Homicides:
•
On average, more than three women are murdered by
their husbands or boyfriends in this
country
every day. In 2000, 1,247 women were killed by an
intimate partner. The same year,
440
men were killed by an intimate partner.
•
Women are much more likely than men to be killed by
an intimate partner. In 2000, intimate
partner
homicides accounted for 33.5 percent of the murders of
women and less than four
percent
of the murders of men.

am very glad that many of you were able to see the
realities from my commentary last week. Thank you
for sharing your thoughts on how to help change the
Crime Emergency that is taking place here in Washington
DC and in our communities around the United States, and
even the Caribbean.
Unfortunately
though, I did not get as many responses as I should have
gotten for something this important, and apparently this
is the reason why we have this problem, because many of
you just don't care, until it affects you personally.
On
to more important things - ALL ROADS LEAD TO MIAMI
on Columbus Day Weekend. We received information
from the International Caribbean Music Festival which
will be taking place in Miami on Saturday, October 7th,
2006. There is a host of Caribbean entertainers
scheduled to perform. The producers of ICM Fest
have asked us to help spread the word about this big

(below). It should be exciting because there are
Soca and Reggae artists scheduled to perform at this big
event.
It
is being held at Bicentennial Park in Downtown Miami,

Trinidad & Tobago New York.
The Miss Trinidad and Tobago New York takes place at
the Fashion Institute of Technology, Haft Auditorium,
West 27th Street at Seventh Avenue, in Manhattan, set to
begin at 7:00 pm. A dozen young women will be
competing for the title.
This year - the 10th year, founder Renee Cummings
will pay special tribute to the work of T&T born
master hair weaver Clem Lue Yat who will receive a
Lifetime Achievement Award along with legendary T&T
queen maker Jacqui Koon of the famed House of Jacqui
Modeling Agency.
Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York, says Cummings, is
celebrated not as a beauty pageant but as a
developmental program for young women of Trinidad &
Tobago heritage living in New York. The T&T-born
Cummings has spent the last decade branding the pageant,
adding, "There is nothing more beautiful than an
educated woman." And she has strived to
redefine the word beauty. "There is this big myth
that beauty comes in a particular, shape, size, and hue
but not at Miss Trinidad & Tobago New York,"
said Cummings. "We embrace diversity and encourage
difference. We do not look for generic or archaic
cookie-cutter images of beauty. We look for real women
with a real contribution to make," Cummings added.

Alison Hinds, Bunji
Garlin, Jovi Rockwell, Machel Montano, Morgan
Heritage, Red Rat, Rupee, Sizzla, Tami Chynn,
Wayne Wonder and more.
The 8th Annual International
Caribbean Music Festival (ICM Fest) previously
known as the Caribbean Music Fest takes place
October 7th, the Saturday before
Miami Carnival making Columbus Day weekend
irresistible to lovers of Caribbean music and
culture everywhere.
Inspired during a visit
to Trinidad’s infamous Carnival earlier this
year the promoters decided on adding a wider
range of Caribbean musical genres to a lineup
that already featured popular reggae acts. Fans
will now have the exceptional opportunity to see
the prolific Sizzla who has been called “the
most significant reggae artist since Bob
Marley”, the dynamic reggaeton duo Wisin Y
Yandel and Trinidadian soca favorite Machel
Montano perform on the same show.
The event’s unique
concept is best personified by the 3 time
International Soca Monarch Champ Bunji Garlin
who is also performing. Bunji is the undisputed
leader of the ragga soca genre he helped to
create. Ragga soca combines dancehall’s rap
with soca’s infectious beat.
Wayne Wonder will
perform from his extensive catalog of hits
including “No Letting Go” the hit that
helped him earn a Grammy nomination for his
album of the same name. Super group Morgan
Heritage will add a touch of roots reggae to the
mix.
Barbados will be
represented by Rupee who helped put soca on the
World stage with his video and song “Tempted
to Touch.” He will be joined fellow Bajan soca
diva Alison Hinds also known as the Ragamuffin
Queen. Hind’s “Roll It (girl)” has been
flirting with airwaves all year and she is on
the verge of becoming the first female soca
artist to crossover into the pop market.
ICM Fest favorite Red
Rat performs in his 7th consecutive
appearance. Tami Chynn an exciting new artist
continues the festival’s tradition of breaking
new artistes. Jovi Rockwell, Rempage and Gailann
are some of the many other artists completing
the diverse lineup.
