Greetings,
I'd like to
thank everyone who enjoyed last weeks' info on Emancipation
Day. We receive a lot of positive feedback from the
community. Below I have included some more interesting
info. about Emancipation Day from Rosemary
Sadlier, President
Ontario Black History Society. I found this information very
interesting and informative. I feel it's very important to
know our history. Remember "INFORMATION IS
POWER". See her information below.
On
a sad note we at Arious Entertainment would like to send our
condolences to the family of Ronnie Clauzel aka Dread Ron.
Mr Clauzel was killed in a tragic car accident on July 15th 2003.
Anyone wishing to contact the family call Zoey/Nesha @

More on
Emancipation Day |
You
should know that the British Imperial Act was passed in July 1833 and, as
was the case in those times, the law did not go into effect until one year
later when notice would have been received in all of Britain's colonies
around the world. August 1st was celebrated right away, that is in
1834, in Canada and other countries. Canada had slavery and while
there may have been few still enslaved by 1833, this act still impacted
their lived. However, in some places where interpretations and other
political activities created a sort of graduated freedom with full
Emancipation not being achieved until 1838 - especially in countries like
Jamaica, there was a 4 year lag. Emancipation Day was celebrated in
Canada to mark the abolition of slavery and to rejoice in the freedom of
those in the Caribbean and around the world.
When Nyahuma Obika of the Caribbean Historical Society of Trinidad and
Tobago sought to have the initiative of his organization to
internationalize the celebration of August 1st Emancipation Day, he came
to Toronto, and it was here through letters that I myself wrote, that the
first international observance of August 1st Emancipation Day was
celebrated, then with the Metropolitan Toronto level, then with the
nation's capital Ottawa - all with the assistance and involvement of the
Ontario Black History Society. Later, the Ontario Black History
Society still supporting and working in co-operation with the initiative
of the CHS, was successful in having August 1st celebrated by the Province
of Ontario. (see Bill 46 below: to search check Emancipation Day Toronto,
Bill 0046 of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario) A declaration for
the nation, for Canada is pending. Ghana was much later...and is the
first African country - but there was a North American country that you
overlooked.
On my recent visit to the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the
West Indies, as well as other venues, I was pleased to inform my audience
of the role that Canada has played in celebrating Emancipation Day since
1834 for themselves and in solidarity with others.
Emancipation Day is not just a Caribbean phenomenon, nor is it an African
and Caribbean phenomenon. It was a global issue and should now be a
global celebration. At our International August 1st Emancipation Day
event, the OBHS included the diplomatic core ( eg. Senegal, Jamaica,
Grenada, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago), a range of speakers hailing
from Canada, the Caribbean, and the United States, and participants from
all over the world.
