On-Line Family
Even
though there are lots more important issues to discuss I thought
I should mention the following because of its crucial matter,
and what is being done to remedy the problem.
Many
of you may recall all the controversy that arose after Ex Talk
Show Host Don Imus made some negative remarks/comments on the
air about some African American female athletes, as well as the
gutter words used by actor Michael Richards during his comedy
act in Hollywood. You may also recall as a result of all
the discussions and controversies, rap lyrics were scrutinized,
targeted and partially blamed for lots of the problems regarding
the disrespecting of black females.
I
learned recently that a major movement has been taking place
around the country headed up by the Reverend Al Sharpton through
his National Action Network (NAN) regarding eliminating the use
of three derogatory words in music and media (1) the
"N" word, the "B" word and the "H"
word, which blatantly disrespects women and the African American
Community.
The
National Action Network (NAN) is one of the leading civil rights
organizations in the nation and works extensively to promote a
modern civil rights agenda which includes a standard of decency
for all people regardless of race, sex, social justice for all
communities, and improvement of race relations. Through
(NAN) Rev. Sharpton has established "The Decency Initiative
of the National Action Network", which is led by Ms. Tamika
Mallory, and which was established in order to address standards
in the media and entertainment industries, and whose goal
is to eliminate the use of those three words in music and media
("N"; "B" and "H").
A
couple days ago (8/7/07) Rev. Al Sharpton, Ms. Malloy and their
team organized and led rallies, along with dozens of activists
across the nation for "A National Woman's Day of
Outrage" in more than 20 cities across the US,
demanding that rappers cease use of the "N-word" and
degrading lyrics in their music. The rallies/protests were
held outside of major music distributors to (1) stimulate the
public to stand united in defense of decency in music; (2)
to mount public pressure on the music industry to adapt a
universal standard of respect for all people, and (3) to send a
strong signal to the music industry that the people will no
longer stand by idly while public airwaves are used to promote
disrespect. These rallies/protests were held in several
cities including New York City-NY, Newark-NJ, Los Angeles- CA,
Detroit-MI, Atlanta-GA, Miami-FL, Washington DC; Dallas-TX,
Jacksonville-FL, Chicago-IL, Las Vegas-NV, Kansas City-MO,
Phoenix-AZ, Stamford-CT, Pennsylvania, PA, Columbia-SC,
Houston-TX, Richmond-VA, Baltimore-MD, Augusta-GA".
Rev.
Sharpton, Ms. Malloy and the many activists around the country
have demanded that the music industry eliminate the use of the
offensive words "nigga", "bitch" and
"ho" in recordings. NAN stated "No other
ethnic group is subjected to denigration for profit by the music
industry and the Decency Initiative will continue to demand a
universal standard of respect, particularly for all women and
African Americans.
On
the day of the rallies/protests Rev. Sharpton led a
demonstration at the Motown Museum in Detroit, and during his
speech he stated "I'm here at Motown in Detroit as a symbol
of when music was not denigrating and was
entertaining" He further asked for the
withdrawal of government-run public pension funds from
entertainment companies such as Viacom, Time Warner and Vivendi
that "won't clean up their act", he further stated
"The opposition has tried to use the argument of free
speech, but they don't have the freedom to use peoples' pension
funds against their own will and interest".
Clearly,
the issue against the use of derogatory words in music and media
is certainly alive and well, so If any of you are interested in

Last
week we featured beautiful young Ms. Mai Lania who is a
part of our on-line family, and has entered the “Baby,

Congratulations
to the Jamaican Embassy and the Jamaican Nationals Association
of Washington DC, they really planned and executed a host of
events in celebration of Jamaica's 45th Independence! The
weekend was full of great performances by Jamaican artists,
wonderful galas and balls, and many special events and
concerts. The most exciting was the great performance by
Reggae superstar Shaggy who closed out the weekend
celebrations. A full day of fun, food, drinks and music
was held at the Organization of States huge back porch/yard last
Sunday. Of course, we didn't make it to catch the full day
of performances, but when we arrived what we experienced was
very nice. A few minor issues came up while greeting and
talking with folks from the community regarding DJs of Jamaican
decent and bands that primarily play reggae music not being
hired to be a part of these celebrations (especially since it
was Jamaica's Independence). After giving it some serious
thought we wondered ...if one was celebrating America's
independence would one hire a Chinese DJ or band to perform at
the celebrations? I think not!!! Therefore, this is a valid
issue that should be addressed and rectified for next years'
event. All in all what we experienced was great, which was
really nice for the 2nd year. Look out for this exciting
event again in 2008, I know it will be just as nice!!!!
