Supercat
July 29, 2006
Washington DC |
Last week I mention I was
looking forward to seeing Reggae Legend Supercat, who
performed here in DC. Well, I must say this show was
very good. Of course, I was very disappointed that
the show started late (around 2:00 am), but once it
began it was really good. The show took place at
Zanzibar-on-the waterfront, which I have always said is
a great location for a reggae show. |
| When the show
finally started at 2:00 Stef Luva from WKYS (radio host)
took the stage and welcomed everyone. At that
point you could see the excitement building from the
crowd, which by the way was not as large as I thought it
would have been, considering the amount of crossover
hits SuperCat has had, and the fact that he hadn't been
to DC in many years. Anyway, Stef said "there
is someone here who could introduce the show a lot
better than I could" and proceeded to introduce
Giselle (The Wasse One) from Miami who has been very
popular for a few years now. I believe she is on
the radio in Miami and is from Trinidad, and is
regularly here hosting Klimaxx Entertainment's
"Fresh Fete Fridays" (Every 1st Fridays, which
happens to be taking place tonight.) Giselle
did a great job creating lots of "hype" and
excitement. It's actually a real treat to hear a
new voice, especially coming from someone who is as sexy
as she is. The band took the stage and the room
came alive. They placed a few rhythms to make sure
the sound was perfect, and it certainly was "big up
Ritchie Ritchardson and your crew for a good job on
that." The first to take the stage was Junior
Demus, who was a big dancehall artist in the late 80's,
and he was very entertaining, he sang several of his
hits, which had the place really moving. Lots of
memories came to mind hearing him perform his
songs. At this point it was time for the main
event, so SuperCat took the stage, and all you could
hear was a roar from the crowd. Super cat looking
as "dapper" as ever, moved gracefully as he
always does from hit to hit, in unison with the band (he
always works well with his band.) About an hour
into his performance, I think everyone in the place was
fulfilled, but to our surprise Supercat announced that
Shabba Ranks was in the house and invited him on
stage. When Shabba took the stage the room
erupted, and it felt like an earthquake had just hit
Zanzibar. Supercat and Shabba went through a few
songs, and Shabba performed a few of his own hits, which
sent the crowd wild. Junior Demus returned to the
stage and they all did the famous "Cabin
Stabbin" together (which was a big hit for
Supercat and Junior Demus in the 80's). What a
great show this was, and well worth the money.
Actually, this was one of the best shows I have seen in
Washington in a long while. Big Up to the promoters
Iland Promotions and to Darren Green for having the show
at Zanzibar.

The
Bollywood Fashion Awards – A Glittering Night to
Remember
Press
Release
July
30th 2006
The
Bollywood Fashion Awards – A Glittering Night to
Remember
The
Bollywood Fashion Awards fulfilled all expectations
and more at the Roseland Ballroom in the heart of
New York City
on July 29th 2006.
Supermodel
Iman, designer to the stars Rachel Roy, Music Mogul
Damon Dash, Theater Legend Ben Vereen,Mrs Altovise
Sammy Davis Jr all participated in the function’s
festivities, making it truly the most glamorous
South Asian event.
Iman,
the ethereal Somalian beauty, presented Rachel Roy
with the award for “Outstanding Contribution to
American Fashion” for her elegant and demure
couture which is a celebrity-favorite in
Hollywood
. The ravishing designer thanked her husband,
Damon Dash, and daughter Ava, both of whom greeted
the audience, for their hands in her success.
Another
top honor was given to theater legend Ben Vereen who
was felicitated with the specially instituted
“Sammy Davis Jr. Award” for effortlessly
combining style and talent, just as the late Sammy
Davis Jr. did. The late Sammy Davis Jr’s
widow, Altovise, presented the award to Vereen; he
keyed up audience-members by instructing them to
boast: "We've
got a message for the world -- we are stylish!"
The thousands seated broke into loud applause when
he spoke of his desire to go to Bollywood.
Rouge,
the girl-band at the top of the charts in the
U.K.
and
India
, was honoured with the Award for “Most Stylish
International Group.” Later in the evening,
they captivated the crowd with their gorgeous looks
and mesmerizing renditions of their hit songs
including “Don’t Be Shy.”
Other
awards were bestowed upon Aryan Vaid (Model of the
Year – Male), Nethra (Model of the Year –
Female), Manish Malhotra (Designer of the Year –
Film), Sabyasachi (Haute Couture) and Black (Most
Stylish Film).
As
if the glamour and glitter of the collections were
not enough, the roster of supermodels from
India
were a feast for the most jaded eye.
Bollywood
designer Manish Malhotra’s trendy and contemporary
line confirmed that Asian and Western fashions could
produce a fusion which could be both spectacular and
elegant. Sushma Patel’s line was a celebration of
the modern Indian bride. Sabyasachi’s collection
created a feast of line, fabric and form with styles
and motifs from past and the present effortlessly
woven into a symphonic whole, leaving no doubt that
he is worthy of his invitation to showcase his
collection at NY Fashion Week this fall.
Other
performers included DJ Sanj, Sourabh Jain, Narayan
and Amir Jamal. Broadway’s Bombay Dreams’
lead, Manu Narayan, hosted the evening.
A
warm glow of having seen something memorable and
wonderful seemed to settle on the viewers as the
evening drew to a close. Kamal Dandona, who
launched the Awards, has instituted an event that
has become beacon for generations of designers
drawing inspiration from both Indian and American
traditions.
