  JUNETEENTH:  Emancipation Day, Freedom Day and Jun-Jun.  Whatever name one calls it, the fact is that it is the oldest African-American Observance in the United States which dates back to 1865, and one of the most important in American History because it commemorates the freedom...the ending of slavery.  This special day is celebrated across the United States on June 19th.

General Order Number 3: "The people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and free laborer."

HISTORY OF JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.  On January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued his official Emancipation Proclamation, which contrary to popular belief did not immediately free a single slave.  

Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19^th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on the Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the new Executive order. However, with the surrender of General Lee in April of 1865, and the arrival of General Granger’s regiment, the forces were finally strong enough to influence and overcome the resistance.

The idea for creating a day to honor our fathers began in Spokane, Washington by a woman whose name is Sonora Smart Dodd.  Mrs. Dodd thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909.

Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Mrs. Dodd wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Mrs. Dodd's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a National Father's Day.  In 1926, a National Father's Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father's Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed  a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June for Father's Day to be a holiday to be celebrated.  However, In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father's Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother's Day.

June is Black Music Month

June is designated Black Music Month, and this year is the 30th that "Black Music Month" is celebrated nationally.  President Jimmy Carter designed June "Black Music Month" in 1979 upon the encouragement and endless lobbying of Kenny Gamble of the hit making R&B Songwriting & production due of Gamble & Leon Huff, who felt that the entire month of June should be designated as a time to acknowledge the contributions Black musician have made to the art form.  To this day every President continues to issue an annual Black Music Month Proclamation.  THIS YEAR PRESIDENT BARACK H. OBAMA ISSUES THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN MUSIC APPRECIATION MONTH PROCLAMATION.  CLICK HERE TO READ THE PROCLAMATION.

During this month we are afforded the opportunity to  recognize the many black music genres throughout time such as Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop,Neo-Soul, Reggae, and Soca.  Additionally, during this time we celebrate the contributions black singers, composers, writers, producers and musicians have made in the history of music.  

For us at Arious, music is our "special thing"... it's our heart and soul.  We are passionate about music, and it inspires us and produces a kind of pleasure that we cannot do without.  It refreshes our nerves and mind, and it is certainly our refuge. Therefore, we have been celebrating this exceptional month in a special way by attending as many concerts and musical events we can find.  

Last weekend we attended The Carter Baron Amphitheatre first show of the summer season, which featured 2 time Grammy nominated singer Ledisi, along with Washington DC's own Kenny Lattimore.  Well, this show was excellent.  Kenny performed wonderfully during his set, but captured me when he continued singing after his set ended acappella to the audience while Ledisi's band were setting up.  Oh dear...Kenny was fabulous.  

Ledisi was outstanding, she was full of energy and seemed very comfortable on stage as she performed hits after hits. Ledisi is a young soulful woman who truly can sing , and who is known for her jazz influenced vocals.  She sings Neo soul, R&B, Gospel and Jazz;  and uses the full range of her voice. Additionally, she is a very good performer, because she gave it her all at this exciting show.  She was absolutely great! 

Before the show began, the announcer indicated that Ledisi had a special guest performer who would be singing with her on stage.  To everyone's surprise the special guest was DC's own Father of Go Go Chuck Brown.  As Ledisi introduced Chuck the crowd in the theatre rose to their feet and began chanting  "Wine me up Chuck".  Clearly, everyone was thrilled that Chuck was the special guest, and most importantly, Chuck would be performing. 

Chuck Brown's performance of his Go Go tunes was nice, and Ledisi expressed why she wanted to sing with Chuck: "she wanted to sing blues together with him."  Which they did, they sang "Rock Me Baby", and their rendition was excellent.  Having Chuck on the stage, singing with Ledisi was certainly the highlight of the evening.  

Ledisi performed for almost 2 hours without a break, and closed out her show by singing my favorite song "Alrignt".  You can imagine our evening at this concert under the stars (that were peaking out in-between the clouds) was great.  If Ledisi is coming to your town, I urge you to run out and get your tickets for her show, it is absolutely worth it, because she is an excellent singer and performer.

The Celebration of National Caribbean-Heritage Month continues, and we are celebrating, recognizing, paying tribute and commemorating Caribbean-American Heritage by: 1) Celebrating (a) the great contributions of Caribbean-Americans to the economic, social and cultural landscape of the United States, and (b) Celebrating the historic relationships between the people of the Caribbean and the people of the United States.  2) Recognizing (a) the many contributions of Caribbean immigrants and their decedents to the well-being of America, and (b) Recognizing how Caribbean-Americans enriches society by being leaders in government, arts, entertainment, sports, fashion, poetry, theatre, in businesses and much more. (3) Paying tribute to the common culture and bonds of friendship that unite the United States and the Caribbean countries. (The vibrancy and hopefulness due to the talent, faith and values of Caribbean-Americans); and (4) Commemorating Caribbean-American heritage, history, culture and contributions to the United States.  For more on Caribbean-American Heritage Month and its history CLICK HERE! Generations of immigrants have preserved the traditions of their homelands, and these traditions have defined our Nation's identity.
