On
the evening of Wednesday, June 21, 2006, Congresswoman Barbara Lee
will lead an hour-long Congressional tribute on the House
floor in honor of the inaugural National
Caribbean-American Heritage Month. This hour-long
tribute will be aired on C-SPAN TV (and available online
at www.cspan.org) after
the last votes on Wednesday. You are encouraged to
tune in to this tribute, and most importantly please
encourage your Congressional representative to participate
if available and/or submit a statement for the record.
As you
know many
Organizations and groups are continuing to commemorate and
celebrate
this historic occasion throughout the month in many
different ways locally and around the country, and you
will find many of them listed on this blast. Please
go out and support/celebrate this historic occasion.
We
received some important information about Toronto Carnival and
we are not
sure if it's fact of fiction, but being that we are involved in
Carnival here locally, I see a lot of similarities of
what's been happening here locally, and actually with many other Carnivals around the
country. Take a look of the information below and let us know what
you think. Please be aware that we do not endorse
this, or even know anything about Toronto Carnival (Caribana), except
that when folks return from that Carnival they always
express what a great time they have had at this Carnival.
If anyone can enlighten us on this issue
please let me know.

To:
The City of Toronto, Festival Management
Committee, Toronto Mas Bands Association,
Caribbean Cultural Committee, Toronto residents
and the International Community:
The 2006 Caribana™ Festival or any facsimile
thereof, is at risk of an untimely demise due to
the desperate actions of a few self-appointed
“spokespersons” for the Black and Caribbean
Community in Toronto. These incumbent and former
members of the Caribbean Cultural Committee (CCC)
now refer to themselves as “Hands off Caribana,”
(HOC). They are at loggerheads with the City of
Toronto as a result of the City’s withdrawal
of funding for the Festival from the CCC, and
the City’s action to divert its funding of the
festival to the Toronto Mas Bands Association (TMBA),
with finances controlled by the Festival
Management Committee (FMC).
The HOC committee has been very vocal and
disruptive to the process which was put in place
after 38 years of the CCC’s inability to
properly account for its finances. HOC has cited
racism among other charges leveled at the city.
HOC wishes to prevent the festival from
happening by calling an international boycott of
the city during the period of the Festival,
unless the city restores the management and
funding of the festival to the CCC.
We the signatories of this petition, wish to
state that the members of HOC do not speak for
any majority of members of the Black or
Caribbean Community. Furthermore, we view the
actions of members of HOC and the CCC as
despicable. We would like them to know that we
have no interest in the CCC managing the
Festival or handling Toronto taxpayers’ money
in any capacity. With their history of
unaccountability, human rights violations,
disrespect to taxpaying residents of Toronto and
its elected representatives; we call on the CCC
to respect the following wishes of the
undersigned:
That members of the present Board of Directors
of the CCC cease and desist from any further
involvement with the running of the parade and
related events occurring during the period July
21 and August 7, other than their personal
enjoyment of these events;
That all members of the Board of the
CCC step down and disband with immediate effect;
That at the culmination of said period,
a new committee be created that does not include
any individual that has served on the Board
within the past six years
That this new committee tenders
nominations for a new Board to be formed and
makes a call out for paid membership
That no Board Member is allowed to
serve for more than three years
That no Board member is allowed to run
for any post on the Board before six years from
the end of their term in office
That the elected board is given the
resources necessary to plan, organize, raise
appropriate funds and present the festival known
as Caribana™ in 2007, its fortieth anniversary
Sincerely,
The

Special presentation by Todd Mangatal
For National Caribbean-American Heritage Month
|
Greetings!!!
Thanks to the many of
you who responded and shared your Caribbean
Story!!! The responses were overwhelming,
and all
are so very interesting. I even received a
lot of "thank yous" for sharing and for the service
we provide through our weekly e-mails. One
in particular I would like to share, only because
it's from another business person from our
community who is making a difference. I want
to send a special thank you to Caribbean Vibes
Radio and it's owner Fiona Wright, we really
appreciate her kind words. (See below).
Due
to the massive amounts of information we have
included in this e-mail, I felt I should hold off
on continuing this week with "My Caribbean
Story". Please forgive me! Lots
of folks indicated they could not wait for me to
continue with my story, but hold tight, I promise
I will continue in the next week or so! You
see Carnival is rapidly approaching here in DC and
we are receiving lots of information that we must
share with you first!!!!
Again,
thanks to the many of you for all the responses
and all the stories you have so graciously shared
with me. We do appreciate your support, and
to you tuning into our weekly blast.

Dear Susan and Todd,
I trust you're both in great health and
enriched in God's blessings.
I would like to take a moment on behalf
of myself and the rest of the CVR
(Caribbean Vibes Radio) team to say
THANK YOU for all you've done to
help yet another humble spirit of
Caribbean roots----to start a dream. You
both embraced my idea prior to the
launch of Caribbean VIbes Radio back in
November, 2004 and with open arms helped
to distribute surveys, share the website
information, listen etc. Since
then, you've continued to support the
radio station in many ways and for that
we truly appreciate you and the Arious
Entertainment family.
We get emails and calls from listeners
all across the globe sharing just how
much it means to have a radio station
such as ours. We've come a long way and
have further to go, yet the journey is
so much more special when people like
yourselves take time to give
unselfishly. As we celebrate
Caribbean-American Heritage Month, we
salute you both for carrying the
torch and for being a leader in the
Caribbean-American community.
Continue to be inspired as you
share information about our beautiful
Caribbean heritage and to create
positive experiences for many. Thank you
so much for all you do in and around our
community.
Nuff respect,
|

Marcia
Griffiths In a career spanning four decades
Marcia has earned her title 'The Queen of Reggae'. She
spent her teens singing at Studio One, has worked with
many of Jamaica's greats and continues to make music to
this day. She is a successful female
vocalist in the history of reggae music, having recorded
in every one of the myriad of styles in Jamaican music,
from ska through to an 80s rap crossover record. Her
precocious talent was recognized very early by producers
Coxsone Dodd and Byron Lee, who were competing for her
father's signature on a recording contract even before
Griffiths' tenth birthday. Dodd was the winner because she
"liked his vibes" and Dodd's Studio One set-up
was like a "musical college". It was there that
Griffiths achieved her first Jamaican number 1 in 1968
with the rocksteady hit "Feel Like Jumping", a
record that can still fill dance floors. She had worked
very closely with Bob Andy during this period and he had
written many of her biggest hits for her. In 1969, they
recorded, as Bob And Marcia, an interpretation of Nina
Simone's "To Be Young, Gifted And Black" for
producer Harry J. The popularity of the record ensured
crossover success and it rode high in the UK charts in
1970 and became a hit all over Europe.
In 1975, she became one of Bob Marley's I-Threes
backing vocalists, along with Rita Marley and Judy Mowatt
- recruited to fill the musical gap left by the departure
of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh from the Wailers. For the
remainder of the decade and on into the 80s she recorded
and toured with Marley, still continuing with her solo
career, but after Marley's transition in 1981, she
returned to extensive recording as a solo artist. Her
"Electric Boogie" with Bunny Wailer was a hit in
the USA in 1989 - seven years after it was recorded - and
even inspired its own dance - "The Electric
Slide". She continues to make records that matter.
Rita Marley has enjoyed a successful solo career
in her own right. In her early days she had originally
worked with the Soulettes a female ska trio. The Soulettes
began recording for Clement Dodd Studio One Label in 1964.
Dodd asked his emerging star Bob Marley to mentor them.
Rita Marley subsequently enjoyed several solo hits in
Jamaica, among them "Pied Piper". Prophetically,
she would back the Wailers on several early recordings.
Her album “Who Feels It Knows It” produced a big
hit "One Draw", a pro-marijuana lyric
recorded in 1981, became the first reggae single to top
Billboard's disco singles chart, which was used to track
dance-club play at the time. Rita Marley continued to enjoy single
successes with "Many Are Called" and "Play
Play". . In 1988's Rita Marley recorded Harambe
(Working Together for Freedom), and
followed it in 1991 with We
Must Carry On, which garnered a Grammy
nomination. Both albums continued her knack for danceable,
rootsy reggae with spiritual messages and a definite sense
of fun.

Caribbeana
Comedy Festival
THE “CARIBBEANA
COMEDY FESTIVAL”!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON,
D.C. –“Laughter brings the people together”, stated on air
by legendary Von Martin, radio personality and producer of
a 30 year and running radio program entitled
“Caribbeana” on WPFW 89.3 FM (tune in Saturday evenings from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM).
Some say Caribbeana’s Washingtonian comedy
festival is similar to B.E.T. Comic View with a hint of
Apollo’s audience, except when the comedienne belts out
his or her punch line you’ll hear the sweet sound of the
Caribbean islands. Ideologies
covered by the comediennes who hit the stage range from
what some consider scandalous actions of a nation’s
president to how people rear their children or survive a
relationship.
On Sunday, June 25th at 7:00 PM in Cramton Auditorium of Howard University, Von Martin will cap off the weekend of DC Caribbean carnival
events with this year’s “Caribbeana’s Laugh It
Up” comedy festival. This year he brings to the
stage an action packed, sidesplitting, and entertaining cast of Caribbean
artistes such as: Owen
“Blacka” Ellis (Jamaica), Ity & Fancy Cat (xxxxx),
Sprang A Lang (Trinidad & Tobago), Learie Joseph
(xxxxxxx), Deborah Maillard (xxxxx), and special guest
Calypsonian singers Gypsy and Black Sage, whom will be
giving a special extempo performance, an achapelo improtu
form of singing, in tribute to a former cast member,
“Big B”, who past in 2005.
