As a Listener and supporter of Doug Gilmore we would like to share and pass on some information about him in hopes that everyone in our community support a special fundraiser that is being held in his honor. We came to know and enjoy Doug through his popular show called the "Doug an Lorna" Show, where he was the co-host with Lorna Newton. This show was a top rated show on WHUR (Howard University Radio Station in Washington DC for a number of years!

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We need your help.

Exactly one year ago, one of our very good friends and colleagues, Doug Gilmore, suffered a life altering accident. Perhaps you have heard the news. While returning home from a trip to Atlanta last May, Doug was in a horrible automobile accident with an emergency vehicle. The accident has left Doug with a traumatic brain injury.

During this first year, the focus has been on moving Doug from intensive care, to acute rehabilitation, to living in his home with 24-hour support and supervision. On the first anniversary of his accident, we now need to move to the next phase, which is planning how we are going to help support Doug for the rest of his life.

Doug’s physical recovery has been amazing and has defied the odds. However, in January, Doug’s neuro-psychologist released him from therapy after concluding that his inability to reliably access long-term memory and new short-term memories would be permanent. As a result, he was declared permanently disabled and will most likely be dependent on others for the rest of his life.

Because of his fragile state, Doug is unable to work and thus has suffered a true financial hardship. As you can imagine, Doug has ongoing medical needs, requiring full-time assistance and can no longer earn a living. Even with some limited health and disability insurance, Doug’s financial picture looks bleak. That’s why we need your help.

“Friends of Doug Gilmore” will host a fundraiser for our dear friend and colleague on Wednesday, May 31^st from 6pm to 9pm at H20 Restaurant & Lounge, 800 Water Street , SW Washington , DC 20024 . We invite you to stop by and make a monetary donation to help Doug get back on the road to financial freedom. There will be a silent auction where you will have a chance to bid on items ranging from professional services to tickets to see the Washington Redskins.

This will also be a chance for us to mix, mingle, network, and “party with a purpose” while enjoying music by Miles Jaye as he presents the Miles Jaye Jazz Café. Our surprise musical guests will be Doug’s two sons, Duke and Dexter, along with Doug’s godson Lance. Doug was a single father raising all three teenage boys at the time of the accident.
