This Sunday, May 1st, they will be holding their big “May Day…May Day” Fundraiser, and they have a wonderful line up of bands and artists scheduled to perform for you. Below are some words from the Executive Director Mr. Loughton Sargeant.

Yes, DC Caribbean Carnival needs the community financial support more than ever. The DC Caribbean Carnival, are going through some major challenges that will directly impacted the 13^th Annual Caribbean Carnival Extravaganza. Your tax-deductible contribution will go a long way in ensuring that some of these major financial obligations will be met. This week I got word from a member of the Tobago Association of Metropolitan Washington DC, that they will be hosting a Caribbean Style Mother’s Day Brunch. The proceeds from this event goes toward helping the schools in Tobago with their school supplies. This is a really good cause, because as we all know our kids in the islands need to have the proper supplies to make their learning experience a more enjoyable one. The price is really reasonable ($10.00), so please go out and support this organization, and enjoy their delicious variety of foods. Also, enjoy their live entertainment and talent showcase. As they indicated to me, they want all on our on-line community to “Come out and celebrate this Mother’s Day with delicious food, and good company, and don’t forget to invite all your friends”. Excitement is in the air!!!!

I am hearing lots of talk and receiving lots of e-mails from folks who are interested and excited about Klassik Productions "Mothers Day Caribbean Gospel Festival" (Sunday, May 8th). Many of you had questions about the artists and several other inquires, so this week I have decided to share with you information on each of the artists scheduled to perform at this event. To the many who had other questions and needed specific details, I have forwarded your e-mail to Klassik Productions. If you have not heard from them yet, be assured that an e-mail well be forthcoming. Below you will see I have included the bio of Sam Archer on this page, however please click on the respective names to continue meeting each of the Artists (Roger George, and Signal Hill Gospel Choir) who will be performing at this great gospel festival as well. Additionally, I have included information on the company out of Atlanta (Wilbourn Exclusives who will be presenting a wonderful fashion extravaganza at this event..

Sam Archer

Sam Archer began his musical career in Tobago at age five when he was introduced to the piano. By age eight he began playing for school assemblies and church functions, and joined an orchestra called The Joyful Noise where he played the Melodica. He started writing songs and poems at age nine, and seven years later teamed up with two schoolmates to create a gospel group known as Hi-Lite. In 1988 Sam left Tobago for New York and started a band which was also named Hi-Lite. Along with a fellow Tobagonian, Sam ministered in song around the Tri-State area. Over the years his group developed, boasting four-part harmony, and making an impact on the local gospel circuit with its cutting edge street sound. Their first single was called “Do You Love Me” which received heavy rotation on local radio stations and resulted in invitations to share the stage with various artistes including Witness, Yolanda Adams, Commissioned, Hezekiah Walker & LFC Choir, Monique Walker, and Ron Winans. In 1996 Sam decided to venture deeper into his musical roots with a project known as Soca Therapy. This project launched Sam as a singer as well as a musician and allowed him to perform on WNBC’s telethon for Hurricane George Relief alongside Tito Puente, Junior Jazz and Voices of Theory. In 1999 he was invited to perform in Senegal, and upon his return produced a highly inspirational and positive album with a gospel flavor, aptly named “The Return”. During this era Sam’s music addressed social issues, and he was also involved in record production for various artistes including a song entitled “Baby Girl” recorded by R&B’s B2K on the Sony/Epic label. Sam’s first gospel album, “De Gospel According to Sam” was released in 2002, a compilation of eleven songs glazed with a Caribbean flavor. This album solidified Sam’s standing in the world of gospel music and created a splendid fusion of gospel and soca.

We are receiving tons of inquiries about BWIA Invaders Steel Orchestra coming to Baltimore, Maryland on Mother's Day. Yes, that is a fact! One of the Carnival Associations in Baltimore (CCDC) is celebrating "Mother's Day" with a Pan concert featuring BWIA Invaders Steel Orchestra. Scroll down, or click here to view the details.

We got a lot of responses from people who were wondering why there are so many soca events taking place, and not much reggae. There is 1 main reason for that! We must keep in mind that the Carnival season has begun here in DC and around the U.S.; therefore, many promoters are contacting us and using our service to expose their events. On a personal level, (just to answer a few) of course we welcome and encourage every reggae promoter to contact us to use our service (in order for us to share their information regarding their events to you our on-line family.) On the real, as summer progresses there will be plenty of reggae events, so to all who are inquiring “Hold Tight”.

Before I close I want to share some information I received from a friend and a member of our on-line family. I think it is a very important issue and you must be informed about it. It’s the “Building The Dream” Foundation to support a memorial for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“BUILDING THE DREAM”

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial has been authorized for construction on the mall in Washington DC. Congress passed the resolution in 1996. The four-acre site is on the Tidal Basin, adjacent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, in what is known as the “monumental core” of the Mall. NO PERSON OF COLOR HAS EVER BEEN HONORED THERE.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity began the project. The have thus far raised $35.5 Million for construction. However, $100 million is actually needed to complete the entire project. It has been extremely difficult to get African American people to contribute. This plea comes from actual witness who has seen people who don’t want to give anything, and have seen others who have given a $1.00.

What is Going On?

This memorial site is monumental to our history and culture as a people.

This legacy is something that will serve to provide us with a little more self-respect, dignity, acknowledgement from other cultures and a more sound position in the development of the History of the United States of America.

The supporters of this event is not asking that you give your life savings, just give as little or as much as you can afford.

Remember we are rarely written in the books or sculpted on the Mall, so take pride by saying that you are part of making this happen.

“PLEASE GIVE SOMETHING…WE MUST STOP BLAMING OTHERS FOR OUR SHORTCOMINGS AND START BUILDING OUR OWN”.

The Washington, DC Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc. launched the BAND TOGETHER TO BUILD THE DREAM wristband campaign on February 14, 2005. For a donation of $5 or more, you will receive a "Build the Dream" wristband. Your support brings us one step closer to building this memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This year, Caribe will be presenting an all-inclusive children’s section entitled, “Neptune’s Children.”

Caribe will be launching “Kiddies Cabaret” at the T&T Association 5123 Georgia Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 3:00 – 7:30 p.m. $7.00. Children from ages 5 to 12 are invited to participate in this “mini band” launching.

The price includes food, music and a fun workshop on how to design a costume and a short talk about the history of carnival will be given. A panel of judges will be on hand to select the team who decorates the best costume.
