This week I had the opportunity to vibe with a young lady Ms. Ebony Jordan from Indianapolis, who requested I inform all of you on my on-line community about her efforts to helping deliver aids medicine to Tanzania. I also had discussed this issue with Ian Campbell (Congressional Staff member) whom I met at the Awards Ceremony for Michael Jackson here in DC some weeks ago, and Mr. Campbell is working on this same cause. It’s critical that they get financial help immediately, or a million dollars worth of medicine will go to waste. *Have a million dollars worth of aids medicine

*Need help trying to pay for the destination for the medicine to Tanzania

*Fortune 500 companies told them NO - (it is fact that they only donate to countries that they have robbed and killed/seriously wounding the people.)

*Have reached out to members of the black caucus in hopes that one of them would step out with this - AND NOT SO MUCH AS A HELLO!

*WE HAVE REACHED OUT TO CELEBRITIES and so far none would like to "Share the Wealth"

*WE Have Been on FOX, and even NBC twice yet no response... we have the medicine, and we have to ship it by the 25th of this month or US Government Regulations will Prevent us from doing so! - It is their way of protecting the people of Africa, in the past people have sent bad medicine or poison - so to AVOID that, to disperse medicine internationally , it has to have a SIX MONTH SHELF LIFE!

*It's enough medicine to treat 100k children and Adults

Taxation without Representation"

Last week we talked about the fact that DC is not a state and the citizens are not represented in Congress by a voting Congressperson. Here is a brief comment from a member of our community (Mrs. Deanne Samuels) regarding this subject. This message should give us a little more insight of how things work presently in DC as far as their representation in Government and what we need to do to change things.

The subcommittee that handles funding for the District of Columbia falls under the Appropriations Committee, and that subcommittee is named the Subcommittee on the District of Columbia, chaired by Republican representative from New Jersey Rodney P. Frelinghuysen. The ranking Democrat (minority) is Pennsylvania member Chaka Fattah. This committee has not been the same since my former boss, Cong. Julian Dixon, Democrat from California, (born in DC) chaired this subcommittee when the Democrats were in power and the district had a vote in Congress before New Gingrich (Republican from Georgia) became Speaker of the House and the the Republicans were in power. So do we need to go back to the 60's & 70's and march for our rights, I'll say a big yes to that. Also Caribbean people living in the United States, particularly the District of Columbia, who are eligible to obtain citizenship status should seriously consider that option Yes we all say we going back home but until we sell the house, trade in the SUV's, and take the kids out of private school, we need to get involved and take part in the political process because "we" are not immune from the laws that are affecting our brothers and sisters in the District.

As you see our database is growing and gaining more popularity, and as a result of this we are being exposed to many good causes and organizations that are trying to help their communities. So along with the partying we must be conscious of the issues that affect our community and the world around us.

Friday Night we had the opportunity to meet with some very nice ladies locally here in the DC metropolitan area Yolanda Alleyne, Beverlee Dawkins and Vanessa Andrews who are board members of a great organization called Caribbean Connection, a non profit organization and social club in Maryland. Their goal is to link up the people of the Caribbean here in DC/MD/VA to support their many efforts for uplifting and most importantly helping with the many issues that plagues our families and people in the Caribbean. Their slogan is "Out of Many, One People, United we are on". Two important issues that they are extremely passionate about is raising funds to purchase medicine and educational materials to ship to the Islands and making sure the hospitals have adequate facilities. In an effort to bring attention and exposure to their organization this year 2004 they will place a band/float in the DC Carnival. The band is called "Washington Rampage" which is affiliated with "T&T Rampage" out of Trinidad and featuring "D Birdcage". We had an opportunity to view their costumes this past weekend at their 1st Band Launching held at Izora Restaurant and Night Club, and they were extremely beautiful. Yolanda, Beverly, Vanessa and the crew have planed several Band launchings and events up until Carnival, so I urge you to attend the functions to witness the live display of costumes, and most importantly join their band and Organization. Sunday was very nice. We attended Performers Stephen Samuel "SAM"O"'s show at De Pan Masters Panyard. He did a variety of music (R&B, Oldies Top 40, Reggae & Calypso etc.) He is an exciting, performer and someone you should look out for.

We Radio Update

WE RADIO petitions are going great and will be closing out the drive at the end of this month. We will then present the petitions to Michael Powell, FCC Chairman. Let's hope we get WE RADIO back on the air soon.

A Review of Death Before Dishonor in Jamaica

Sound Systems and Selectors Gauge an All Out War at Death Before Dishonor: By Flair Lindsey

Early juggling by Code Red got the crowd hype, as they played a wide array of dancehall hits ranging from classic Bounty Killer tunes to new music from Sizzla, Tanya Stephens, Capleton and a host of other artists. Thousands of sound clash fans poured into Pier 1 to witness an all-out-war among some of the sound clash industry’s premiere sound systems. At the start of the competition, not all of the contenders were yet present. Ricky Trooper and Tony Matterhorn were the last participants to enter the stage.

The first round was a hot opener for the exciting night that awaited sound clash fans, as sounds and selectors prepared for war. All of the soldiers maintained impressive performances, playing wicked dubplates to win the approval of the audience. Poison Dart opened the round with loads of energy and a set of dubplates including a tough dubplate of Sanchez crooning “Frenzy.” This outfit, the 2003 U.S. Champion, delivered a great performance particularly since it was their first stint in Jamaica. After an indisputable win at the UK Cup Clash only nine days earlier, Black Kat entered the stage with confidence. Black Kat’s leading selector, Pink Panther boasted an immense amount of energy, backed by a rack of vicious dubplates. Despite an 8-year lapse in playing in Montego Bay, the crowd embraced Black Kat. Selections including a dubplate of the fiery tune, “Earth a Run Red,” by Richey Spice drove the crowd into a frenzy. Ricky Trooper, donned in a white suite bearing the Jamaican flag, was up next. He scored with a dubplate of Anthony Cruz covering “Step in the Name of Love.” Mighty Crown opened the night with a dubplate from a Japanese artist, which received a forward. Their second tune was a combination of Richey Spice and Chuck Fender singing “Spinning Around” and “Oh My Lord,” backed by a guitar. This combo received a huge response from the crowd. Tony Matterhorn, the reigning Death Before Dishonor champion, opened with poor sportsmanship and excessive fussing. His rude opening overshadowed his performance. Despite the overwhelming amount of boos Matterhorn initially received, he managed to eventually win the first round.

The fury intensified during the second round. The sound systems and selectors brawled for the less-than-friendly crowd’s attention. It was visible that contenders would have a tough battle. Poison Dart started the round with some wicked dubplates including “Stop a Man” by Beres Hammond. Unfortunately, Poison Dart was unable to maintain its flow and control of the audience. As Pink Panther entered the stage in rare form, he immediately captured the crowd with a dubplate of “Prosper” by Frisco Kid. This selector also dubbed the “War Tanker,” took the respect of the audience to another level. Ricky Trooper had an average round, which mostly consisted of him running around on stage and running off at the mouth. Mighty Crown unleashed some vicious music during this round. Their dubplates of Beenie’s “Don’t Hate the Player,” and

Capleton’s “In Her Heart” and “Fire Time” were crowd pleasers. Matterhorn had a respectable performance during this round. His ammunition consisted of specials from his buddies Vybz Kartel and Bounty Killer. Black Kat’s command of the crowd during this segment secured a victory in round two. Poison Dart, who had a commendable performance during the first round, was eliminated from this round.

With the wee hours of the morning approaching, the crowd grew antsy. Round three still afforded 15-minute sets for contenders to display their talents. The sound systems and selectors truly had to win the crowd over during this pivotal period. Black Kat delivered an infectious performance during this round. He invited the crowd to dance with him as “Everybody Dance Now” infiltrated the outdoor arena. An “In Her Heart” dubplate played by Black Kat, caused sea of fire to appear in the audience. Ricky Trooper played some great tunes including a hot combination by Sizzla and Jah Cure. Trooper’s performance at times became very boring. Hence, he lost the attention of the crowd. Mighty Crown released a number of attacks on the competitors. At times, the numerous attacks, made via dubplates, were funny. Focusing on Matterhorn’s lost visa, they played tunes consisting of “Deport Them,” “Worry Dem Foreign Mind” and many more. Of course, a dubplate of “Many Men” by Fifty Cent recked the place. Upon starting round three, Matterhorn retaliated against Mighty Crown. He unleashed a wicked and profane dubplate of “Why You Doing It” by Wayne Marshall. Black Kat was again the crowd’s favorite, leading them to a victory in round three. Ricky Trooper was eliminated from this round by almost a unanimous vote of the audience. His lost caused him to literally storm out of the venue.

This round was extremely significant given the fact that Black Kat only needed to secure one more win to be declared the Death Before Dishonor champion. Remaining sound systems buckled down under the pressure and attempted to play their best. Black Kat opened with a phenomenal dubplate by the late Garnett Silk. Pink Panther commanded the stage while the theme from Beverly Hills cop served as the backdrop. Black Kat had an exceptional performance during this round. Mighty Crown played some tunes such as “Black Cinderella” and a tough dubplate of “One Blood” by Jr. Reid. Matterhorn’s performance during this round was not up-to-par given the high stakes. After an intense night of performances by the sound systems and selectors, the crowd decided that Black Kat, winner of three rounds, was on their way to Athens, Greece to accompany Jamaica’s Olympic team. Tony Matterhorn, last year’s Death Before Dishonor champion, won the 2^nd place trophy. Although Mighty Crown did not place, they avoided elimination by the audience. Death Before Dishonor was an extremely competitive night. At times, things got sticky. The participation of the sound systems and selectors was greatly appreciated and respected by sound clash fans and Irish and Chin, Inc. Sound clash fans witnessed history being made at Death Before Dishonor, as the sound clash industry has graduated to another level.

Death Before Dishonor Highlights

Black Kat made history in the sound clash industry, as they now hold titles in three countries including the U.S. (World Clash), U.K. (U.K. Cup) and Jamaica (Death Before Dishonor). Big tings a gwan for Black Kat!!
With numerous attacks through dubplates and dialogue, Matterhorn and Mighty Crown fought a personal war in the middle of the Road to Athens.
Trooper, the crowd favorite, turned out to be the biggest let down of the night.
Black Kat dominated the clash, despite an 8-year lapse in performing in Montego Bay.
Poison Dart played a very strong first round.
Mighty Crown played a round of customized dubs that were embraced by the audience in Pier 1.
Matterhorn played a series of Bounty Killer and Vybz Kartel combinations throughout the night.
Tanya Stephens, radio personalities DJ Squeeze (Link Up Radio – NY) and Richie B (Hot 102 Jamaica) and Kilamanjaro were present.
