The
Celebrating and acknowledging of our leaders, the inventions,
discoveries and accomplishments throughout history
Stokely Carmichael later renamed "Kwame
Ture" Civil Rights Activist, African-American Social Activist
and Prominent Leader of the "Black Power Movement"
Stokely
Carmichael was born in Port of Spain Trinidad on June 29,
1941. At an early age his father moved his family to the
United States to New York City's Harlem Neighborhood. Later after
his family moved to the Bronx he was admitted to the Bronx High
School of Science (a school for gifted students). Mr.
Carmichael was in school in the Bronx in the early 1960s, which was
during the time the civil rights movement exploded into the
forefront of American Culture. During this time The Supreme
Court declared that school segregation (separating people based on
their race) was illegal. Also, during this time (in
Carmichael's senior year in high school) four (4) African American
freshmen from a school in North Carolina staged a famous sit-in, or
peaceful protest, (treating people differently based solely on their
race) at the white-only lunch counter in a department store.
The actions of these four (4) students mesmerized Mr. Carmichael and
he soon began participating in movements around New York
City. He graduated from the
"academically elite" Bronx Highs School of Science in
1960, and decided to study at the historically black Howard
University in Washington DC where he majored in philosophy. At
Howard University Mr. Carmichael became more deeply involved
in the civil rights movement. He participated with the
Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and joined a local organization
called the Nonviolent Action Group who were connected with an
Atlanta-based civil rights organization (Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and whenever he had free time Mr.
Carmichael would travel south to join the "Freedom
Riders" (an activist group that rode interstate buses in an
attempt to end segregation on buses and in bus terminals).
"Sit-Ins" and other demonstrations to challenge
segregation. He graduated from Howard
University and earned a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Philosophy in 1964. After
graduating he continued participating in sit-ins, picketing, and
voter registration drives throughout the South. In June
1966 he was elected the SNCC's National Chairman, which was the year
of the great march in Mississippi that was in support of James
Meredith who had been turned away from a court-ordered admission to
the University of Mississippi Law School. Here is where the
slogan "Black Power" was the rallying cry of the march and
Mr. Carmichael was its primary exponent. (This is where
the cry for "Black Power" began, and which became the most
popular slogan of the Civil Rights era.) Mr.
Carmichael was especially very active in Lowndes County, Alabama,
where he was field organizer and helped found the Lowndes County
Freedom Party (a political party that chose a black panther as its
symbol). It was during this time the Black Panther symbol was
first displayed which inspired Huey Newton and other California
activists to organize the Black Panther Party. Mr. Carmichael
worked very closely with the Panthers. In 1967 Mr.
Carmichael coauthored with Charles V. Hamilton "Black Power,
the Politics of Liberation in America". where they linked
the struggle for African-American empowerment, or the process of
gaining political power in America to the end of imperialism
worldwide (the end of powerful countries forcing the authority on
weaker countries, especially those in Africa). In
1968 he became the Prime Minister of the Black Panthers and served
for a brief time - he resigned from the post the following year
(rejecting Panther loyalty to white activists). Soon
thereafter Mr. Carmichael based himself in Washington DC and
continued to speak around the country. Meanwhile
Mr. Carmichael became interested in Pan-Africanism, and was a
serious student of the writings of the movement's leaders,
particularly those of the post-colonial heads of state, Julius
Nyerere of Tanzania, Guinea's Sekou Toure, and Kwame Nkrumah of
Ghana. Due to his disenchantment with the Panthers
Mr. Carmichael moved to West Africa, and while residing in Africa he
changed his name to "Kwame Ture" to honor Kwame
Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence from Britain, and Sekou Tore,
who was President of Guinea and his mentor. He had the
honor of working with both Sekou Toure and Kwame Nkrumah and served
time as Nkrumah's Secretary. His work with Nkrumah and Ture
led him to found the All-African People's Revolutionary
Party. In 1968 Mr. Carmichael married the
great South African Singer Miriam Makeeba and they had a son "Bokar" For
more than 30 years Kwame Ture led the All-African People's
Revolutionary Party and devoted the rest of his life to Pan-Africanism
(a movement to uproot the inequities of racism for people of African
descent and to develop an economic and cultural coalition among the
African Diaspora.) Unlike many of Kwame Ture peers who emerged form the
civil rights movement Kwame never compromised. His was a
voice that would accept nothing less than true empowerment for his
people even if that meant the dismantling of the international order
that hoards the world's resources and keeps most of its people
down. He was especially unforgiving of American Capitalism,
which he saw as the greatest oppressor on earth. Most
importantly his passion and beliefs always remained strong. He
continued to support a revolution as the answer to the problems of
racism and unfairness until he died at the age of 57 in 1998 from
complications of prostate cancer in Conakry, Guinea. To the
end he answered the telephone "ready for the revolution". Source/Reference:
