Victory...Victory...Victory!
"...Change
Has Come..." says President Barack Obama
The
people have spoken! OH YES WE HAVE, and our voices
mattered, because history was made on November 4, 2008.
We, approximately 64,413,006+ of us (53%) elected our candidate
Barack Obama as the next President of these United States.
President
Obama on this long difficult journey ascended to the highest
position in the land and has become the First African-American
to hold this position…Yup, the first
African-American President of the United States of America.
This is truly an amazing time in history, that many of us are
extremely happy to witness in our lifetimes.
As
most of us know President Elect Obama received 364 Electoral
votes compared to Senator McCain’s 163, which is a decisive
defeat and clearly a blow-out. On-line family WE DID IT
along with millions across the county. All races, all
colors and most importantly all ages, went out in high numbers
and voted in America's most historical Presidential race for
this phenomenal man. WE CERTAINLY DID IT!!!
Tuesday, November 4th, 2008,
even though it was an uneasy day; it was one I will never
forget. I personally was a nervous wreck; feeling as if I
was sitting on "pins and needles". Once I
arrived home I tried to unwind and snuggled into my favorite
sofa in front of the TV waiting for the results. As they
began coming in, I found myself becoming upset because they seem
to be unfavorable for my candidate. I remembered panicking
and calling my husband Todd practically every minute complaining
to him about the results. Needless-to-say, once Todd
arrived home and the results continued coming in I became a lot
more relaxed. And would you know it...before my eyes
Senator Obama began winning state after state after state, and
the electoral college votes rapidly began adding up.
Tears of joy flowed down when
it was announced that Senator Barack Obama was the President
Elect of the United States. This brilliant
African-American gentleman we all believed in is indeed the new
President of the United States. Many of you shared with me
your joy and stated you fell to your knees and said a pray of
thanks between the tears.
 For
me, at the very moment it was announced my thoughts went full
circle and I reflected on all the demoralizing heartfelt events
that took place throughout the history of the United States with
African-Americans. The pain and suffering our ancestors
endured fighting for their life and their families, the
lynchings, withstanding the powerful water hoses, surviving the
bites of their flesh by attack dogs, marching and fighting for
equal rights, equal justice, equal pay, proper and equal
education, and just to be treated equal in many aspects. I
reflected on Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's famous "I Have A
dream" speech and thought of how proud he would be of this
major accomplishment, and of how America has progressed
throughout the years to overcome its hatefulness of a race of
people. Oh yes, America has come a long way and on this
night November 4th, 2008, its citizens chose change, came
together, united and chose the right person for the job who
would govern over this great nation, and lead this country back
on to the right path of success.
 Additionally,
this accomplishment has broken down barriers and has given us
hope. Our children can indeed be all they want to be, they
can now see themselves as great leaders. They are now able
to look at a reflection of themselves in President Obama, and
believe in themselves. Most importantly, our children can
strive to accomplish what President Obama has
accomplished...they can now work hard towards, and fight to
achieve the highest position in the land.
 Indeed
President Elect Barack Obama has accomplished a major milestone,
but it will not be an easy road for him; because he has
inherited more problems than any other President of the United
States. There will be lots to do to fix the many crisis's
we are currently undergoing: (1) the failing economy; (2) the
housing crisis; (3) the unstable stock market; (4) the war in
Iraq and Afghanistan; (5) the high unemployment rate; (6) the
health insurance crisis; (7) folks losing their
retirement/pensions; (8) the energy crisis, etc. (just to name a
few). He certainly begins another long and difficult road
to bringing things back on track and in order in this great
nation. I truly believe he can progress, in fact I know he
will!!!
Before I close out this topic,
I must share with you how astounding the night Tuesday, November
4th was, and one which I will never forget, became as it
progressed it became more astonishing and
interesting.
You see, we decided to leave
the house to get a bite to eat, and continued driving while
listening to the speeches and results on satellite radio.
We found ourselves several miles away from home and in
Washington DC. As we approached the White House, we saw
thousands of people congregating in the streets, jumping,
screaming and celebrating President Obama's victory! The
thousands of folks who were celebration were young and predominantly
white; and they were running up and down the streets of
Washington DC chanting Obama... Obama... Obama... Yes we
Can... Yes We Can... Yes We Did... Yes We Did...
This was an amazing site, so
we decided to get out of the car and walk around town to check
things out further. As we walked we saw police officers
standing looking on in astonishment and several were capturing
this astounding site via their cameras and video
recorders. We even saw a popular local news reporter
who expressed to us that he had never seen anything like this in
his life, and he told us to walk down to the White House to see
the thousands who were celebrating this great victory
there.
Astonishing is not the word,
it was simply unbelievable. These harmless young folks
dressed in their Obama/Biden or there "Yes We Can"
T-shirts, holding their Obama/Biden posters chanting, singing,
playing instruments, and parading in bands/large groups up and
down the streets of Washington DC. Many were in cars as
well and were driving up and down blowing their horns to the
beep of "Yes (beep) "We (beep) Can (beep).
After spending a few hours observing this amazing site, we
decided to drive to other areas in DC to check out what was
happening.
On the historical "U
" Street Corridor people were celebrating the same
way. The same thing was taking place in the trendy
district of Adam's Morgan, and finally we drove to Howard
University and found the students who lives on campus were
hanging out in front of their buildings chanting and celebrating
this historical victory.
This was certainly a night to
remember for years to come. Actually, I don't recall
anything like this ever happening in past elections, and as I
inquire more, everyone has told me, nothing like this has ever
happened before either. WHAT A HISTORICAL NIGHT AND
EVENT!!! The countdown begins: today is 73 days
before President Elect Obama is sworn into his new position -
The President of the United States of America.
 To
President Elect Barack Obama, his lovely wife Michelle and
daughters Malia and Sasha we wish you all the best. Please
know that we are very proud of you and your historical
accomplishments.
We know you are a wise
President, and we pray that as you govern over these next four
years, all you do is successful. May you and your family
be blessed, and are always kept safe.

 On
November 4, 2008, we lost 73 year old Jamaican Soca/Calypso
Legend Byron Lee, who was the leader of his world-famous band
"Byron Lee and the Dragonnaires". Mr. Lee passed
on after a two-year battle with cancer.
The lost of
this exceptional and famous entertainer is very devastating for
many around the world because Mr. Lee has entertained thousands
for over 50 years, and was loved by many. He recorded
several ska and calypso songs, including "Tiny Winey"
and "Dancehall Soca."
Mr. Lee played a
crucial pioneering role in bringing Jamaican music to the world,
actually he was the first person to promote live Jamaican music
in North America, and was one of the biggest reasons for the
explosion in popularity of Jamaican music in the late 60s and
early 70s. In addition to his band being successful,
he was a successful promoter, label owner, and studio
owner. He also introduced Carnival to Jamaica.
Late last month,
Mr. Lee was honored with the "National Honour of Order of
Jamaica" for his outstanding service to the music industry,
and in 2007 he was honored with the "Order of
Distinction" in the rank of Commander. Additionally,
Mr. Lee received several other awards (1) Institute of Jamaica
Centenary medal for the development of music in Jamaica in 1981
and (2) the Silver Musgrave medal for his contribution to music
in 1978.
We at Arious send
our sincerest condolences to Mr. Lee's family, friends and
fans. He will always be remembered, and most importantly
he will be remembered for the music and legacy he leaves behind.
RIP Byron, your music will forever live on.

 Join
Pannist Shawn Thwaites for a stimulating evening of "Soul on Steel"

At Busboy
& Poets, 14th and V Street, N.W., Washington DC
Mr. Shawn Thwaites was
born of Trinidad heritage. He was taught by his father to
play steeldrums. His father Robert Thwaites is a stalwart in the
steelband movement, having played with Pan Am North Stars, one
of the premier steel orchestras hailing from Trinidad. Shawn has
performed with numerous steelbands in the US and abroad.
Thwaites has performed with Andy Narell, Roberta Flack, Lauryn
Hill, Len Boogsie Sharpe, Walter Beasley and Esperanza Spalding
to name a few. Shawn and elder brother Sherwin were the
first two steeldrum players ever accepted to Berklee College Of
Music on scholarship with their principal instrument being the
steeldrum. He graduated from Berklee College Of Music in
2003. Shawn still continues to perform and arrange music
for the steeldrum band at Bates College, with The Thwaites Trio
and for his non profit organization Pan United Youth Movement.
Look out for Pan United’s
debut CD (yet to be titled. Shawn released his debut solo
album with R&B songs from Corrine Bailey Rae, Jaime Fox,
Anthony Hamilton and his composition, First Born created for
first daughter Kamari.
 Go
out on Wednesday. November 12th and check out Mr. Thwaites, it
is sure to be a very exciting evening full of lovely pan music.
