WHAT'S HAPPENING by Susan Mangatal Greetings
To all among our on-line family: This past weekend was "Off The Hook". We turned the Miami Carnival trip into an actual mini vacation. We extremely enjoyed visiting family and friends throughout Florida. We began in the Tampa/St. Pete area visiting family on Friday and Saturday, then we traveled to Orlando/Kissimmee and hung out with friends Saturday evening until the early morning of Sunday, which was the best part of our trip. In addition to chilling over drinks, good conversation and watching domino games, we were able to discuss the hurricanes and get the real story on how hard the Hurricanes hit the Orlando area. It was amazing to get the full details from our friends on all the devastation as they were heard, and felt from the rain and winds, and how scared they had become during those dangerous storms. We also got eye witness views of the destructions, many roofs are covered with blue tarps because of the storm damage, homes are still 3/4 covered with water from the flooding, most yards have turned into lakefront views, huge trees completely rooted up from the ground (like someone just pulled them up), iron signs completely bent and broken into pieces, most of the billboards along the highways are destroyed. It was a sight for us, and clearly there were lots of destruction in Florida. We want to Big up Gilbert, Sam, Sharon, Lance, and Kenny for the hospitality and the drinks, we really enjoyed the great music, and real good vibes. Sam you are a true Vibes DJ, and you must have been the best in your time!!! We finally made it to Miami during the early hours on Sunday. With our heads bad and with very little sleep, we hooked up with friends and decided to attend the Broward Carnival, which was a good decision and turned out to be quite nice. Of course the drinks started flowing and the "liming" began, (which was "off the hook".) We had lots and lots of drinks while checking out the scenes from the Carnival, so sobering up was not on the agenda. The parade was held in the street and proceeded into Lockhart Stadium, thousands of people streamed into the stadium as well, and there were lots of vendors, so from our calculations this Carnival profited quite well. This entire event was really good. The truck that DJ Smally played on was good (the Kiaso Boyz "Mudders Nation"). Good job Smally!!!! It is clear to us that Miami can indeed handle 2 Carnivals, because from the reports from the many folks that attended Miami Carnival, they too had many people in attendance, therefore both Carnivals did very well We attended the "Stamina" event in the early morning of Monday (head still bad). After being informed by the promoters that the venue (Marlin Hotel) was too small from the sales of the tickets, so in the last minute the event was moved to "The Jade Nightclub" in South Beach. We had a good time, and it seems the others who attended had fun as well. If you missed this one, you really missed a nice event. Big Up to ICE Productions and his partners...Good to see you stretching out to other cities, and most importantly in putting on a reasonable priced event. Of course there were lots of competition over this very busy weekend but you guys did good. Big up to you too Jermaine! We would like to congratulate Sam'O for placing 3rd at the Calypso Monarch show in Miami. Below is an interview with Sam'O.
You may recall several weeks ago, we informed you that a member of our on-line family intended to begin a 24/7 On-line Caribbean Radio Program. This young lady (Fiona) asked that we inform you of her intentions, and get feedback on her idea. This was done by forwarding to you the Caribbean Radio Listener Survey, which many of you answered...thanks! Ms. Fiona have decided to move things to the next level and most importantly give you (the people) what you want. The "Caribbean Vibes Radio" (Caribbean Internet Station) is schedule to launch on or about November 1st, 2004. In the next week or so we will publish the results of the survey for you to view. There are a few more Carnivals left before the North America Carnival season comes to a close. This weekend (October 15 & 16) is the Jacksonville Florida 5th Annual Caribbean Carnival. The "Carnival Organization of Jacksonville, Inc." will hold their event at Hemming Plaza in downtown Jacksonville on Saturday. The parade of bands begins at 12 Noon. If you are in Jacksonville, or is passing through Florida, stop by for the food, music, drinks, arts and crafts and lots of fun. Click here for details on the Carnival, and Click here for the Kick off party taking place tonight (October 15th). To our on-line family have a wonderful weekend! Until Next Week!
