Arious Entertainment Weekly "What's
Happening" 2006 Newsletter - October 19th
| |
Greetings On Line Family by Todd Mangatal
This week we had the opportunity to witness something very
exciting, which will be taking place in Washington DC for the
next 9 weeks. It's the Capital Star Talent Competition
organized by One Heart Charities, Inc. One Heart Charities
is a new Organization that was created to help non-profit
Organizations who are fighting financially to continue the
Community Service Programs that are badly needed in our
nation. One Heart Charities is a promotion and marketing
organization whose sole purpose is to raise funds for distribution
to small non-profit organizations that are doing hands on work
with our community residence who are most in need. We at
Arious Entertainment feel this is a great cause, and as many of
you who are regular readers of my weekly commentaries know
I always talk about the Community and things happening in our
community. Many times I have ask if any of you had ideas
that could help solve some of the problems in our community, and
have asked you to please let us know what they were so that we
could work together to build a better community. I'm glad
to share with you that the founder of this Organization (One
Heart Charities) contacted us and discussed with us this
exciting venture, which seemed like a great idea and something
that is really needed for the Community, especially since we are
always looking for ways to help the community and are also looking
for new talent. The Capital Star Competition is something
we are really excited about, so of course we decided to give Ms.
Samuels a 100% support with this event and with her Organization.
The Capital Star Competition is being held at Zanzibar on
the Waterfront, 700 Water Street, SW. Wash. DC, which is a good
location for an event like this. This is a great
opportunity to find and see some of the wonderful talent in the Washington
Metropolitan area, and maybe if we find the right ones, we can
help nurture them and take them to "higher
heights". What's exciting about the competition, is
that all types of talent are being showcased, such as singers,
comedians, poets, rappers, dancers, musicians, etc. and it's
open to everyone above the age of 18, no matter what type of
talent they have, (from rock to country.) There is a
$1,500 grand prize, and each week the 1st Place winner will
receive $150.00 and there is also prizes for the 2nd and 3rd
winners.
I encourage each and everyone of you who are interested in
supporting our community and like to be entertained, to please
come out and support this exciting event. Admission is
only $5.00. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and before the show
begins at 8:00 pm you can have cocktails, network, and enjoy the
sounds of SAM'O and JFC band.
This past Tuesday (the first week) was very nice, and the
talent were really all great, which I knew was very difficult
for the judges to pick the winners. Last week Susan was a
judge as well as Hollis "Flash" Lashley, and both
indicated it was truly tough, I'm glad it was them and not
me. I got some nice footage for Arious TV, so those of you
who missed the first week, we will be featuring some of the acts
on Arious TV over the next few weeks.
Come out and hang out with us this Tuesday, we would love
to meet new friends and see old ones. Let me take a moment
to feature the 3 winners. Unfortunately, there was only
room for 3 winners, but two artist that stood out was Lando
Fields and Ryan Charity (Scrypture) who are both rappers and who
has a lot of commercial potential. They will be getting a
2nd chance though to do their thing again.

1st Place
Winner - Pam Ward, Singer
A native of Washington DC, started singing gospel
music in church. She has done a lot of singing in
groups and bands in the DC area. She has performed
at Constitution Hall, the Lincoln Theatre, the Apollo
Theatre, Radio City Music Hall, and other venues up and
down the East Coast. Pam branched into theater and acted
in the stage play “Divided We fall", and she will
be appearing soon in her next play “Lord I’m Coming
Home". Pam’s
dynamic vocals have afforded her the opportunity to
share the stage with great artists, such as Jennifer
Holiday, Rahsaan Patterson, Regina Bell, and Patti
LaBelle. Pam
hopes to one day become an unforgettable recording
artist whom people can be inspired by…just as the
artists she loves.
Pam won with her
dynamic vocals of Jennifer Holiday's "And I am
telling you" |
|
2nd Place
Winner - Cire Jones, Singer Dancer
Cire
has been a professional singer and dance in and out
of the states for 28 years.
His voice is liquefied soul, with a dynamic stage
appearance. He
has performed at Caeser’s Palace in Las Vegas, and a
variety of spots in the DC area, New York City, Paris
and Berlin to name a few.
He is a songwriter, as well as a performer.
Cire
came in 2nd place with his fabulous dancing and singing
of Usher's "Yeah". |
|
3rd Place
Winner: Christopher Fields, Poet
Tapping into the ambient energy
of verbal expression Christopher assumed his true
identity of the Poetry Man.
His style is a hybrid of the Church, the
Classroom, and the Corner.
He bends words to penetrate and overcome all
barriers to effective communications.
The Poetry man does not recite his work; he
lives, breathes, and bleeds Poetry.
His very soul is manifest each time he delivers
the word.

Miami Nice” by Susan Mangatal
Yes, traveling to Miami to take a little
“breather” away from the everyday “rat race” was pretty
nice. We are always
“on the low” during our annual trip to Miami for the
Carnival, and we really are never interested in attending all
the events, we just enjoy the beach, having breakfast, lunch,
dinners and cocktails in Miami Beach and just love chilling, and
from time to time even chilling with friends.
This year was no different, that’s exactly what we did.
Of course the beaches were beautiful, and the entire trip
was great.
For the first time this year instead of
stopping in Orlando to visit friends, we just passed through and
headed straight to Miami, checked into our hotel, had dinner at
a cozy restaurant in South Beach and passed through our favorite
spot "Mangos" for drinks and to listen to the good
reggae band that normally performs there. On Saturday, our
day was full doing tourist things, lunch, shopping, and due to
the wonderful temperature (hot) we headed to the beach, since it
was the best place to hang out and feel the refreshing cool
breeze.
After checking out the sunset in the Haulover
Beach area, we headed to the International Caribbean Music
Festival, which was held at Bicentennial Park, and the treatment
we received from the producers of this show was “off the
hook”. Big
up Chuck B, nuff respect, and thanks!!!!
We collected our passes and entered the
event. Rupee was
just coming off the stage and was singing his hit “Jump”, so
we thought we had missed a lot of acts.
Anyway, we settled in back stage and began checking out
things, and the press was certainly “in effect” at this
event. We found our
corner and began listening and watching Giselle “D' Wassi
One” (one of the emcee’s) being playful with Rupee and doing
a good job at announcing the acts.
Apparently, we had really not missed too
many artists. I
must say at this point, the stage was a masterpiece (actually
one of the biggest I’ve seen in this area) and the sound was
excellent.
Alison Hinds came on and did her thing
and of course had the crowd “wining with her”, meanwhile
backstage many of the artists such as Wayne Wonder, Red Rat,
Voicemail, etc. were doing their thing with the interviews and
being filmed and photographed.
We were doing our thing also, capturing the artists on
film as well as on photos.
A few other Soca artists came on and sang a few songs.
The next “up and coming” reggae artist that took the
stage was Tami Chynn, and she really did a great job delivering
her songs to the crowd, who seemed to love her performance.
Todd feels she's very
marketable. Once she got off stage she immediately
came back stage to be interview and filmed/photographed by the
press. The show
kept moving without long breaks in between. The next major
act on stage was Bunji Garlin who opened his performance with
“fireeeeee”, and kept the crowd jumping throughout his set.
He made a comment on stage that made me believe he was
not very happy about something, and he didn’t even come "back
stage" to talk with anyone (he lost out there). That seemed strange though, but he was enjoyable to me as he
always is.
The next big artist was Machel Montano
and for me it was really nice to see Machel perform on such a
huge stage, whenever he is in DC he is always performing in
closed, small environments/clubs (in my opinion.),
and normally starts his show very late (in the early hours of
the morning). If you know Machel, then you know how
energetic his performance is, this didn’t change, he had the
crowd jumping, and the girls were screaming and seemed to be
just loving him. Patrice
Roberts came on and performed her road March hit, and they did a
good job as usual entertaining the crowd.
The other artists that took the stage
was Wayne Wonder, Red Rat, Voice Mail who were all very
good. Unfortunately, we missed Cham (who I’m not sure
performed) we might have missed him earlier, but we are sure we
thought we saw him "back Stage". By this time it
was after 11:00 pm and we had a full day in the sun, and since
we had seen Morgan Heritage and Sizzla recently we decided to
leave early and get some rest before heading out to lime a
little bit more, not to mention the full day ahead on Sunday at
the Carnival.
All in All this was a great show and probably the
best event in Miami this Carnival weekend for what you got
(since the tickets were only $25.00 in advance for so many great
Soca and Reggae artists.) If you are familiar with
Bicentennial Park, then you know it holds approximately 40,000
or 50,000 people, and this event did not pull in that amount
since there were so many other events taking place on this day
in town this weekend. Many people who come to Miami always
supports their favorite event or promoter. We feel if this
event takes place next year, we strongly recommend that you
check it out, you won't be disappointed!!! Here is a 10
minute clip Todd put together of this show for Arious TV.

ARIOUS
TV Features Highlights of the 2006 International Caribbean Music
Festival, Miami Florida
On
Sunday was Carnival day both in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.
We had planned on attending the Ft. Lauderdale event, but at the
last minute we decided to check out the Miami Carnival, not only
because a good friend had his band/truck in the parade, but
because I was interested in the logistics, set up and the fact
that there was no charge, I just wanted to see how this was
going to be done. Well, the vendor set up was cool, the
route was very long, which the masqueraders must have loved, and
being free everyone loved it, and indeed came out.
After
checking out all the bands and capturing some footage to share
with you, we were heading over to Ft. Lauderdale, but on our way
out about 5 blocks away from the actual parade route we ran into
a "runaway band" the one that "Back To
Basics" was playing on. This
band had veered off the parade route and must have had a 1000
masqueraders following their truck into the heart of downtown
Miami. This was an interesting sight. We're not sure
if the driver knew he had veered off the parade route, but we
think none of the masqueraders knew they were not on the route
since they were having such a good time. It was funny and
interesting seeing the police racing down the street and trying
to disburse such a large crowd peacefully. However, the
DJs on the truck did a great job of calmly disbursing the crowd
and pointing them back in the direction of where Carnival was
being held.
Anyway,
after getting past this truck we began heading to Ft.
Lauderdale's Carnival, but received phone calls informing us
that there was a 4 mile back-up entering the park this Carnival
was being held at. So we never made it there, but from all
the reports, Ft. Lauderdale's Carnival was great!!!! Imagine it
was great even though there was a small fee to enter the park
and a fee to enter the actual event. Clearly, South
Florida can support 2 Carnivals.
Todd
has pulled a clip together featuring Miami Carnival below, so
just click on the TV to view.

ARIOUS TV Features Highlights of Miami Carnival 2006
After
Carnival we
went back to our hotel for a minute to chill and refresh
ourselves before heading back to South Beach to check out DJ
Andy Mix DC Link Up "After Carnival last lap
Jam". This event we really enjoyed, it was so nice
and very relaxing, we even left for a little while and walked
over to the beach and chilled on the sand listening to the waves
and reminiscing with a friend from Orlando. It seems
everyone who hang out in DC was in the place, we felt at home
away from home. Good Job Andy Mix, as well as DJ's Smelly
and DJ Shiloh. We missed this event last year, but we just
couldn't missed it this year, and we definitely will not miss it
next year. Look out for a brief video clip of this event
on Arious TV next week. We will also add some photos from
the entire weekend on to our Photo Gallery next week.
Before
we close, we urge you to check out JC Productions Charity
Soccer Match. This soccer match has many purposes (1) to
unify the black community in the metropolitan area; (2) to
promote culture and stateliness, and (3) to give a monetary
contribute to health services offered in the DC area. This
match will be taking place this Saturday, October 21, 2006 @
6:00 pm. The Caribbean All Stars vs. The African All Stars
will be competing at Howard University's Greene Stadium.
100% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to The
Children's Hospital Foundation's Cancer & Blood Disorder
Center. Donation is $10.00. Click

To the Hillocks family we send our condolences on the loss
of Mr. Ricky Hillocks.
Remembering
Alaric “Ricky” Hillock – by Cheryl Hillocks
My
Dad Alaric “Ricky” Hillocks was a Pioneer in the Music
Business here in Washington DC.
He was the proud owner of West Indian Record Mart from
1969 until a few years ago. Back in the 60’s he began by running a booming Electronic
Repair Business and he had Korean workers working under him, his
business was very successful.
As electronics grew cheaper the demand for repairing them
declined, and so did our business for a short time.
However, my Dad was a smart man and was proactive and
didn’t let anything stop him, he began importing and selling
exquisite exotic solid reggae tapes/albums/singles. He and his
friends would traveling back and forth to Jamaica to supply the
demand for the reggae music, and this is where my father started
filling the demand for the flavor of Reggae music and Caribbean
music in the Washington area.
His shop West Indian Record Mart became a place for
people to meet and greet on a Saturday, and to pick up their
favorite music at the same time.
He produced several events in this area and they were infamous!
Back in the 70’s he started the Annual Reggae Festival
in Malcolm X Park (I was only 5 then), and it brought an
explosion of new culture. I
remember all the dreads attending this event and traveling from
as far away as New York, Connecticut to experience this
festival, which was packed with families, radio personalities, TV,
Newspapers and the entire Caribbean Community.
It was such harmony at these festivals, for example
families would watch out for each others kids (respectfully).
I fondly remember how nice this was and what an
outstanding job he did (because he absolutely loved it).
My Dad Ricky Hillocks really played an important part in
the growth of this Caribbean community and I honestly believe he
deserves a medal for his contributions.
I am so very proud of him and proud to be his daughter.
I will miss him dearly and so will everyone in my family.
For
those who would like to pay respects to my Dad the details are
as follows: Viewing for the general public will take place on
Friday, October 20th, from 6-9pm at Pope’s Funeral
Home, 5538 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, Maryland.
The Masonic Services is from 9-10pm.
The Funeral Service takes place on Saturday, October 21st,
from 11:00 am at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1739 9th
Street, N.W., Washington DC 20011 (Viewing takes place at
10am-11am). Repast at Most Worshipful King Solomon Grand Lodge, 2245
Rhode Island Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20018.
