“A
picture speaks a 1000 words,” and gosh this one truly does!
It
was both an incredible and somber moment for me seeing this
picture plastered all over the internet and on many major
newspapers, because it is a beautiful picture and a wonderful
sight. One that I never in my wildest dreams think I would
ever see in my lifetime…NEVER!
It's really good to see, don't you agree?
The
picture is of President Elect Barack Obama at a luncheon hosted by
President George W. Bush at the White House on January 7, 2009,
along with Ex-Presidents Republican George H. W. Bush (1989-1993),
Democrat William Clinton (1993-2001) and Democrat Jimmy Carter
(1977-1981). I understand 1981 was the last time something
as historic as this was held.
It
has
been reported during this luncheon the former Presidents wished
President Elect Obama "the very best."
President
Bush stated: "One message that I have and I think we all
share is that we want you to succeed. Whether we're
Democrat or Republican we care deeply about this country,"
President Bush further stated: "All of us who have
served in this office understand that the office itself
transcends the individual." "We wish you
all the very best, and so does the country."
President
Elect Obama told reporters "All the gentlemen here
understand the pressures and possibilities of this office and
for me to have the opportunity to get advice, good counsel, and
fellowship with these individuals is extraordinary."
I just want to thank the President for hosting us"
The
day President-elect
Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden take their oaths
of office
is vastly approaching;
and as you
might guess things are "jumping" in Washington DC for
this historic inauguration, which is only 11 days away. On
January 20th, the formal ceremony will begin at 11:30 am., and the
swearing in will take place at noon. (Please note: Those who
come to witness the swearing-in ceremony will be able to watch and
listen to the ceremony on large screens that will be set up along
the National Mall.) The 44th President and Vice-President
will attend a luncheon after the swearing-in (that is hosted by
the Joint Congressional Commission on Inaugural Ceremonies.)
Soon thereafter the parade will take place on Pennsylvania Avenue,
and the viewing stands and bleachers will extend from 3rd to 17th
Streets
Currently
lots
of building and constructing of the viewing stands, the
Presidential booth, and many other safety measure structures
around and on the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building, as well as
the parade route are being erected. One of our friends
"Rico" a member of the new social network www.mycaribbean.us
posted some pictures of the structures being built and the
construction taking place in Washington DC. To see these
photos log on and check them out, they are located on the
"Main" page of www.mycaribbean.us.
Needless-to-say,
after seeing Rico's pictures we decided to travel to DC for the
evening last weekend, where we had a wonderful time walking around
the city checking out the beautiful sites and all the construction
and crazy "going-ons" taking place around the White
House area. We ended the evening at a cozy restaurant in
Georgetown, where dinner at this restaurant was fantastic.
Crazy
and chaotic is exactly how it will be in DC for the
inauguration. Several millions are expected to travel to the
city to witness this historical ceremony. There will be lots
of street closures, and I understand Police will block off/close
all bridges crossing the Potomac River into Washington DC (all the
bridges entering the city from the south). The only way to
get into the city from the south is by using public transportation
or going around the beltway (395) and entering through
Maryland. Additionally, 3.5 square miles of downtown DC
including the business district and government buildings
surrounding the National Mall will be closed to traffic starting
the afternoon of January 19th (the day before the inauguration -
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) and will not open until rush hour on
January 21st. CLICK
HERE to see the Washington Post Street Closure Map.
I
have listed some sites below you might want to log on to for all
the details on the closures and the inauguration ceremony.
As
I look at all the information we have constantly been receiving
about the different inaugural balls, parties and events taking
place around the city, my head is spinning because of the cost to
attend many of these event. They are between $125.00 to
Several Thousands plus dollars. It leaves me wondering why
these promoters feel folks have any disposable income to attend
these costly events, especially with the high unemployment rate
and bad economy. We all are absolutely ecstatic about this inauguration
and do want to celebrate, but simply don't have any disposable
income or extra money to pay the entrance fees to these
events. Come on promoters, why do you feel you have to
capitalize on this historic event? Be sensible and
reasonable for God's sake!!!
Nonetheless,
there will be 10 official balls which has been planned by the
Presidential Inaugural Committee, six will take place at the
Walter E. Washington Convention Center and one at the National
Building Museum, one at The Hilton Washington, one at Union
Station and one at The D.C. Armory. Of course, there are
other balls planned by different community organizations and state
societies, along with different community promoters. The
President Elect in keeping with his commitment to make this
inaugural celebration open and accessible to all Americans, will
host the first-ever "Neighborhood Inaugural Ball" during
this year's inaugural celebration. The ball will be the premier
event of inauguration evening (January 20, 2009) and will be held
at the Washington
Convention Center. It has been announced that tickets to
this event may be available at no cost, or if there will be a cost
it will be at an affordable price, and a portion of tickets for
this event will be set aside for DC residents. The ball will
include web casting and text messaging to link neighborhoods
across the country with the new President and this premier
event. As of earlier this week details regarding ticket
distribution to this event were not released, nor announcements on
how Americans who are attending neighborhood balls across the
country can participate actively in this celebration. I
understand details will be released soon though.
As
For those of you who intend to travel to DC for this historical
event, keep logging on to the different sites I listed above for
any or all the details you may be seeking.
